I go fishing a lot but im curious as to when the time to catch something like striped bass is in New England? I know mid to late summer is good but what about during the fall. What is good to catch around now?

Hmm I think your best bet in fall would be cod/haddock/pollock if you can get out in the open seas.

It depends a lot on which part of New England you're in, but generally speaking there is excellent striper fishing from early may through Halloween. The further north you get the shorter the season it becomes but there are areas in CT and MA that hold fish 12 months a year though. Belive it or not, the mid-late summer you described is actually some of the slowest Striper fishing of the season with fall being inconsistent but absolutely lights out when it's on. Big fish too.

Yeah I fish in the CT, RI area and there’s pretty decent fishing in the sound but nothing like MA

The striped bass run is on right now in N.Y. with some big fish being caught around the inlets and under the schools of bait. Sand eels just started moving and the bass Love them.
I caught some schoolies in the surf last weekend but the big fish were out about half a mile.
Season here ends in December but most of the fish have left by then.

Most of the strippers are gone, however the few still here tend to be Huge this time of year. Problem is those left are in places like the Rose and Crown and the old man which is Behind Nantucket. Dangerous water, esp. now. I lost my room mate Dicky P from Brockton back in1970. He was fishing the old man and really loading up. One day he just never came home. Be Careful. R I P Dicky

Every year on Cape Cod some white perch ice fisherman (if there is ice) catches a couple of strippers through the ice in one of the fresh water herring ponds on the cape in FEBUARY. They dont ALL LEAVE.
