Why do people use uni knots to tie two different line types together? What is the purpose?

The purpose of using the Uni is To secure the knots.

People prefer them because of their simplicity and strength but any knot will do, so long as it holds.

Im useing a braided fishing line becores its its not so flexible and you can feel better what is happning (and its strong with a small diameter) and in the end i have around 2m of monofilm i dont know why but i get more fish with a monifilm line than with a braided line :) hope it's help

Typically people tie double uni knots to connect the leader to the main line. For example tying fluoro leader to a braided line helps with clear water conditions, not letting the fish see the line and only the bait presentation. A smaller reason is that it saves the main line from being cut off and lost somehow.

Braid is more sensitive and more supple. It has a smaller diameter for a given strength than mono or flouro. It doesn’t stretch so you can feel light bites better. Unfortunately it is not very abrasion resistant and is the most visible of the three. Flouro is nearly invisible and very abrasion resistant but typically not as supple and heavier so it doesn’t cast as well. (New flouro is much better than the old originals). It also has little to no stretch. This is often used as a leader and is more subtle since it’s harder for the fish to see. Mono is in between braid for visibility and abrasion resistance. It stretches more as well so if you want something that will take a bit of shock like a leader for trolling you can add some mono to your braid.

Eliminate a swivel and to tie a thicker leader to main line! Less tackle for fish to see and works well with lures that do not spin. If fishing spoon or spinner use swivel then.

I use a double blood knot to tie two lines together when replacing line tied to backing. It holds tying two braided lines together. I use the FG knot to tie leader to braid. I tie it between my fingers.

The uni in essence is a jam knot , thus it maintains good overall strength when marrying to different types of lines sans different diameters ! Works just as well on lines of equal diameter !
UL lines go 7 turns !

You need a florocarbon shock leader on the end of the braided line because connecting the braided directly to your life makes the line visable to the fish.

Just another hint when using braid to mono or floro double the braid by looping it. It will stop the braid from slippingthough mono/floro uni knot. Example 10# braid to 30# leader. The braid makes a much smaller uni knot than the mon/floro leader does.

The best knot for tying braid to mono or fluorocarbon is the fg knot. It is strong and thin keeping it from snagging your guides.

Trouble with FG knot is ability to tie under most conditions , reverse Albright coming off a doubles braid via Bimini is much quicker to tie

If the FG knot is tied just using thumb and index finger pinched together I do not know how it could be any slower than other knots. There is not any tension that has to be set up like shown on You tube.
