An afternoon on the Little River

Just an afternoon looking for some blue gill and small bass…The river is way down, at its lowest point. One can cast to the other side in 20-25ft. Our property backs up to the river and I haven't fished it much. The fish aren’t pressured…guess I’m old school, carried a box of night crawlers. Every time the float hit the water you’d get bit. Found some larger fish in a deeper bend pooling a bit. Some hit like a ton of bricks. On the bottom or with a float!
Thought I’d cast out a blue gill cut bait and see what happened… twenty minutes later zing, peeling off drag. In my mind it was a nice gar. Considered a trash fish, but still fun to catch. I had had one hit a few days earlier but bit through 60lb. mono leader.
Any way, reeled down, felt the weight and bait hook was already set, from the run.
15 mins playing a fish that wasn’t much larger now than a creek. To my surprise when I saw the fish, a big cat!! No nuggets. Always for fun, catch and release. Anyway they’re biting in the little river. Cat was 38” inches length, head 18” wide and 28 lbs. So spend an afternoon and expect the unexpected.

Nice big cat Marcus! I could imagine the fight was a good one with a fish that size. Good catching.

Thanks!! Interesting in a smaller body of water off a sandbar…runs, drag peel and a whole lot of fun. Big cat knew more about my location than I did…. Haha!

Had heard of some smaller channels being stocked… but this big boy was my largest cat ever…I was shocked he was there. Heck of a fight!! What FUN…
