Caught this 12 lb channel cat at a local pond in Hammond Indiana, up north.
Kind of a dumb question, but is it safe to lip a big channel catfish? I've caught a lot of bullhead cats and I know they have a heck of a clamp on my needle nose pliers. I do see channels getting lipped all the time though but I'm still a little worried.

You can do it but it might be easier if you had a glove on that hand.
They have small teeth that are more like sharp, rough sandpaper.
Plus if it's a big enough cat and grips your thumb and then starts twistin it could kinda hurt if your barehanded.
Nice cat by the way. πŸ€ πŸ‘

Sounds good. Just wanting to make sure it wasn't like that bullhead that felt like it was a snapping turtle. I've had to pry the bullhead's mouth open to get the hook out with the pliers.

That's a nice cat Geno. I lip the big one for pics and they do scrape the skin sometimes.

Nice cat Geo.
My biggest channel was 30" 12.4 lb

I always slide my hand up behind the fins.
If Lipping I'd wear a good glove πŸ‘πŸŽ£

Nice πŸ‘ I got a lot of cuts while lipping catfish. It’s best to wear a glove.

Local pond Hammond? Harrison Park? Where I learned to fish as a kid? Just don't know of any other ponds in Hammond.
