I am new to this forum. Live in Birmingham, Alabama and started fly fishing when I was about 8 years old. On summer vacations my family would go to New Mexico or Colorado. My fist fly rod was an 8 1/2 foot fiberglass rod. During the years I was getting my medical education the fish stopped until I was in private practice in Texas. Moved to Alabama in1987 and quickly learned about trout in the Smoky Mountain National Park. It was there that I met people who taught me how to tie flies and make split cane fly rods. My children are grown and one of them is my son who lives in Knoxville. Last Christmas I gave all 6 of my grandsons an Eagle Claw 6.5 ‘ 5 wt. fiberglass fly rod including the youngest who was only a few months old. That’s the same rod I gave to my son when he was just old enough to wade trout streams. I have started teaching his 2 oldest sons, ages 6 and 4, how to tie Woolsey Boogers. They will each get their own vice this Christmas.
Wonder if anyone following this forum knows anything about fishing the Elk River in Tennessee? Have heard it is good but you really need to float it. Any recommendations regarding guides or fly shops there would be appreciated.
