CaptBuddy - I've been thinking it might be a subtle difference as well, particularly with worms. I've tried ditching the snap shackles, switching to the type and color line he's using, etc. Sometimes seems to work... He does have a better set than I do (subject for another post, I think) and probably more subtle/patient in general. Could be how he's landing his casts, but I haven't seen too much of a difference there.

I'm down sizing my hooks and worm next, see if that helps. I do better when the fish aren't hitting worms exclusively because I love trying new things - used a bombarda the other day to use a fly with my spin rig when the fish were only interested in surface bugs, for instance. Swim baits I usually outfish him.

I'm gonna keep at it - totally obsessed with fishing at this point, so no going back.

It might the knot. A guide told me he outfishes everybody because he uses the uni knot which allows more action. Hard to learn but it does allow more action. Also, is he dunking in scent when you're not looking? Are you getting pickups but no hook ups? Crank down until actually feel the fish. Use heavier line, heavier rod, and literally yank 'em cross-eyed.

Creme worms are killer for bass … large/small mouth, river or lake. Why? Those dried worms on your driveway after a big rain? Yeah, worms are washed out from the ground and carried away. So, a worm washes into a lake . . . big bass stake out near shore waiting for the perfect protein meal. A nightcrawler slithers along the bottom trying to surface before drowning. The bass grabs it and runs away from other fish that might snatch it . . . then stops to swallow the meal. So, the idea is to drop the bait in front of the fish. I don’t know what a Texas rig is, but the Carolina rig is 30 inches of clear leader, with a J-hook slid through the very top of the worm, and the barb is out at the band. Then the hook is twisted toward the worm and the barb is buried into the worm. The hook should be invisible, except for the shaft, which makes it weedless. Slide an appropriate weight onto the standing line, tie on a snap swivel, and attach your baited
leader. Sneak up on shore-lying bass. They do not get big by staying put while a big blur clomps to the shore, or a loud boat shows up. Cast to the spot, and set the drag at a feather, reel in like it is a worm . . . slo-o-o-o-o-wly. When the bass runs with it, open the bail and while the line pays out, tighten the drag. When the bass stops, count to three, and set the hook. Rivers are obviously different, but the technique is the same. Good Luck.

I am new to this forum. I don't have a boat so I only fish from the shore in lakes or from a bridge in salt water. My husband fishes in one spot and I fish further down from him. He always catches fish, even though they are small, but I never catch anything. We have traded spots on many occasions and he ends up catching where I was at and I get nothing where he was preciously at. We both use the same bait, shrimp, and the same size line. I have even tried squid, worms, and artificial bait, but still nothing. I would love to hear some suggestions on what I can do to catch fish. I live in mid-Florida, 45 miles west of Tampa, within walking distance to the ocean. It's called Hammock Creek. Neither one of us have ever caught a fish big enough to keep.

Update - went out alone yesterday, returning to the scene of the crime. This time had a much better outing - four or five bass with a couple of big ones, then a monster chain pickerel which was so active even on shore she nailed me with hook or teeth (happened so fast wasn't sure!!), but luckily the finger will heal. I'm thinking it is one of those smaller tweaks that were mentioned by many on this topic, specifically as Raddish mentioned: heavier line.

I've been using really lite flouro and I think that has resulted in my missing a lot of sets...also, makes it harder to feel the fish at all. I bumped up to a heavier line and was able to set much more effectively as well as have a better feel when the fish are engaging the lure. I think I can go heavier still - my go to before was a six pound daiwa pink or green and I started using an 8 or 10 transparent. Seemed to make a difference. I want to work in some braid as I think that will be even better.

I still had a ton of taps and tugs that I couldn't get sets on, but finally landed the pickerel. Used worms for a couple of the bass, grubs for others and swim baits netted the pickerel. The pickerel was a helluva fight - just awesome.

Regardless - thanks to everyone with their suggestions!
