This thread has really made me feel sad. First, that a gal got run off of a good fishin' hole by a creep. I Like the suggestions of pics and conversation (real or not) to deter the idiot....may or may not work... best to just leave... definitely get a description of the guy & truck and tag numbers.
Now to the REALLY sad thing. I am so VERY sad so many of you...and this nation, seem to think a GUN is the answer. I have never embraced that as an answer for any conflict. I simply don't have the capacity to kill another human being. Would I try to defend myself or others ? You bet... but never with the intention of killing. And IMHO, that is all guns are made for or good for. This nation is far too callous towards firearms. I will consciously avoid further conversation with all of you who advocate guns as a solution to ANYTHING,...sorry, I have made a mental note of who you are and what you said.
I registered as a Concientious Objecter in 1971, a time when the nation was in turmoil over an unjust war (as if there has EVER been a "just" war). Many thought I did it to avoid the draft, as student deferments had been terminated. I definitely was thinking along those lines, but was never the true reasoning. The true reasoning is that, in my heart, regardless of the situation, I could never pull a trigger on a human....period. That's the "Concientious" part.
BTW.... my status as a"C.O." (1AO was the classification by the Selective Service Board) was not a deterrent....they drafted me in the fall of '72 anyway (medic). Warm bodies were all they needed. To this day I have ALWAYS defended my nation... just not with a gun, not with violence ever. I will never be convinced that paranoia can be tamed by arming yourself, but go ahead and perpetuate your confidence by whatever makes you "happy" and "confident".... we'll patch you up, ...if you survive the conflict. And we'll throw a hell of a wake for you if you fail.
Hell, this is supposed to be about fishin'....damn,... too pretty of a day to be sad for my fellow FISHIN' friends....oh well, such is life.... I need to go wet a line to take my mind off this #"#*...bye.

I agree with all of the above; whether you open carry or get a CCW as noted and suggested, take a 'Survival/Self-Defense' class with your firearm and familiarize yourself with it until it becomes 'second-nature' to you ! Also, you could carry pepper spray as a back-up; get the strongest, longest-range spray you can find, like the ones they sell for grizzly country ! Phones are a great idea, but sometimes won't get reception in remote areas ! Getting photos of subject, vehicle and plates are also good deterrents, even if phone itself won't work ! Sometimes you can't find someone to tag along, but the 'buddy system' is always preferred, especially in remote areas or in case of emergencies !

Gun, pepper spray and go online for some defense ideas. The nasty stuff, not the cute stuff. It amazes me how many women with a free hand dont go for the eyes or crotch. Hard to be assaulted by a guy with his eyes hanging on his face. Or join a local fishing club and see if you can find a buddy.

There are a lot of folks who think that way, and that's their right, and yours. But one of our problems is that because THEY fear or dislike firearms and do not wish to use them to protect themselves, all the rest of us simply MUST be disarmed. You don't sound like one of them, but you know how hard they are fighting to take our guns away, by rule of law (which will do nothing to disarm the criminals- they don't obey laws).

Ask the law-abiding Jews of 1930s Europe how well that worked out for them.

Guns are like insurance; better to have it and never need it than to need it and not have it.

You wave a gun at a murderer or rapist and their plans change drastically.

Yep ! As another Vietnam-era vet, I have to agree with JimRed; just because YOU don't like guns shouldn't mean the rest of us can't own and enjoy them !
Back in the late-60s/early-70s, the expression 'Hawks' or 'Doves' were used frequently to denote those who were for or against the war, or against the military in general; in my neighbor-hood, if you weren't a 'Hawk', then you were considered to be just plain Chicken-sh*t ! One of my younger brothers told me that if he was drafted, he would go to Canada; I told him that if he did, he should NEVER try to come back, as he would be disowned and a serious embarassment to the family ! Both my grand-fathers served in WWI, my dad and ALL his six brothers served in WWII,
and my mom's brother served in Korea ! I joined the Navy Reserve at the end of my junior year (at 17 yrs.), served as a Reservist during my senior year and went active just following my graduation ! Although the war was over, my youngest brother enlisted just after his graduation in 1975 and served three years ! Don't like guns ? Fine ! You have that right, but in my opinion people like you should just leave the country; you're an embarassment to all REAL Americans !

He does not appear to be one of those trying to disarm us all, and he is free to CHOOSE not to be armed. So we can agree to disagree, but still be neighbors. The ones I'd like to see gone are the gun grabbing radical liberals.

Wow-look at all the positive response! As a former police officer ( 30 yrs. Detroit ) yes carry some type of pepper spray-a very good one almost totaling disabling a person long enough for any escape is manufactures by Fox Corp. I have run into the "female angler" and some are newbies nd funny to watch but everyone's a rookie at one thing or another. I know several that are VERY accomplished fly fisherwomen and salmon/steelhead anglers that men ask them where thy ant to fish as they command that much respect for their fish in ability. In my fishing seminars I stress that you don't have to be a 250 pound linebacker to fish. God luck and if every in the Elk Rapids, Mi area look me up-I'll fish a stretch of the riverbank with you.

Sorry for some of the typos-better check over next time before I send, but then again, I'm a fisherman, not a speller.

Yes take pictures and send them to a friend that knows where you are and to check on you every once in awhile by texting. A large dog makes a good friend and scares most bad people. Also conceal carry is good to have wherever you may be.

I’ve said before on this site. There are a lot of bad people out there. Go with a friend if you can. If you can’t carry a firearm with you and don’t be afraid to use it if you have to. This is what I’ve taught my daughter to do. For those of you who don’t agree you are fools.

Keep a can of wasp spray it shoots very far and is accurate. Will stop anyone for a long period of time and you will be far away nice and safe. Trust me they dont have to be close to you for you to accurately use it effectively.
