Fathead minnows I've seen them work on days when the trout weren't biting on anything else.

Try the bottled fish eggs. Use light line and let it drift down.

Hello I used to live in Colorado and catching trout was hard for me too . There is a bait that will get them every time ,try a yellow or white doll fly tied with maribou feathers and a 1/16oz jig head, more affectionately known as the crappie jig . Let me know if it works for you

In S.D. the trout are more plenty per sq acre than anywhere ,and here's what we do.Get a bag cheap water bobbers slide it on then tie on a swivel. Get about a 5 ft lead tie it on then use a royal coachman fly. Fill water bobber full cast it out whether a bait cast or spinner dont matter real it in quickly there's the wake BAM. OH IF royal coachman ain't hitting within 7 casts, Tie on a black mepps well it's not a mepps it's a rooster tail feather with a propeller on front about inch and quarter long they come in packs of two and EVERY FISH HITS IT BIG BASS I even caught 12 lb cat just count to ten after you cast and let bobber sink

Here in west Virginia I catch most Rainbows on orange power bait. Next yellow rooster tail. Pin minnow. Mealworms, nightcrawlers, pink salmon eggs.

Remembered that when I was in high school in 1959 went with my parents to the eastern sierras in Ca. and that's where I learned about Pautzkes balls of fire salmon eggs worked best, and for the lakes fly lining night crawlers, caught a lot of 1 1/2 to 3lb bows on Crawley lake in the sierras on the crawlers. Fish on.

My grandson, age 14, is the fisherman in our family. He has stopped fishing on The Kern River because he says he never catches anything. Are you fishing for rainbows in River Park in Kernville or up river in one of the campgrounds? Years ago we used to fish at Springhill South campground and we got lots of fish but we have not been up there in a few years for fishing. He was using salmon eggs but will try what you recommend. Any other tips for fishing on the Kern?

I was going to a carshow every October at the park in Kernville stayed in motel right across from river and mostly was able to fish right there, and usually able to catch and release 10 to 15 within about 1 to 2 hrs of fishing each day, we were there 4 days each Oct. 2014 was the last year I was there.
