Caught these in the Ashtabula River, above the RR lift bridge on frozen shrimp. Nothing fancy...#1 snell, 1/4 oz. sinker. Had two more channel, but on the way to the dock they shook off the old metal stringer hooks. Got to the dock and *poof*...

I’ve had that happen with bass; try running the β€œhook” DOWN through their lip.
Works for me!

I'll try that. Actually, the big'un wouldn't fit on my stringer. I had some paracord (don't ask. I'm like Fibber McGee, I have a little of everything hidden away in my kit) and fished it through, tied it with a bowline. Was the most secure fish of the night!

I only figured it out after 50 years of fishing. Some fish can bite the loops open on a metal stringer - but not if you turn it over! I was just slowly trolling back to the dock at the end of the day…

I just came in from catfishing but it appears our run is over. I had been working on the Tchfuncte River in southeast La. the past month and was catching several per hour off the dock. Most fish werfe 1 to 2 pounds but I caught2 over 11 lbs. last week and hooked one I estimate 40 to 50 . Even caught a 2 pounder on a dry fly size 20. Now it seems the spawn is over and Im not sure where they go. Does the same occur in your river. I grew up across the line in Pa.
