I've got one on order (4' radius) and now trying to find a good instructional video. Unfortunately, there's a ton of them on utube but I'm overwhelmed with filtering them out.

If you have one that you found particularly helpful can you forward me a link.

The two scenarios I'm interested in are:
1. From shore -- emphasis on distance
2. From my kayak -- don't need distance but best way to do it from seated position

Thanks in advance,
PapaD

A 4 foot net really shouldn't be much of a problem. It's the larger nets that gives most people the problems.

A 4ft radius, is 8ft in diameter. That's kinda big to throw from a sitting position.

That's why I'm starting with a 4'er. Once I master it, I'll get a bigger one for throwing from shore and use the 4'er (opens to 8') for using on the kayak.

I watched a kayaker throwing 4'er last Monday. He got it to open up every throw and caught a lot of bait. I think that if it had been bigger it would have drug in the water when on his back swing. Unfortunately, I was too far away (didn't have my 'nocars) to see how he very carefully set up the coils.

If I see him again before I figure it out I'm going to stop fishing when I see him headed back to his launch and see if he won't give me a lesson.

I agree but I know it can be done (see the post above).

The kayaker had almost all of it coiled in his throwing hand in what looked like 2' lengths (looked like he was folding as he was coiling).

Good Luck, and I hope you see him again so you can get a lesson in person.

I found one that looks pretty decent and matches what I saw the kayaker doing.

This video matches my needs pretty good, in that:
1. Throw it while sitting (too hard to stand with all the stuff I usually have laid out in front of me)
2. Don't have to thow it over whoever is sitting in front of me (my kayak is a double and I have to sit in back)
3. Don't want to have to hold anything in my mouth

I’ve always thought of throwing a cast net much like a frisbee. Gather it up on your arm and grab the leading edge then twist and throw, spreading out as it goes. Sitting position might be a challenge.

I have one and all I can say is practice on land preferably grass… practice practice practice. 1 out 3 throws for me present a banana effect. It’s in the wrist and how it’s held but everyone is different the way they throw it. I personnely go with the instructions that come with net. It just takes practice, try not to think about it just keep trying. I do get bait fish and couple times I caught a striped bass and even stingray. They are illegal to use on fresh water only salt water is allowwd

Check utube for throwing for deep water shrimp. Watch in particular the part about holding back the trailing edge. Makes it open almost perfect every time . Hope this helps.

I'm concerned Papa D, I believe we are limited to a 36" dip net. Minimum 1" mesh. '23 regs chapter 2 section 4.

That must be the freshwater regs.

I'm using it in the SF Bay.
