Daiwa CG80 came apart fighting a fish
I got a new rod, today (Dobyns Fury 7' MH/F) and put this reel on it to throw around some Texas rigs. The handle has been loose on it from the start, and I have tried and tried to tighten it. It always comes loose, though, and today it came off while I was fighting a fish. I believe this is the final straw.
Good thing I had a Lews LFS on me, as well.

How much was the combo?

Wasn't a combo. I had the reel for a while, I forget how much it was, maybe around $60. The rod is $110.

Not bad.

This series of reel and I believe the CA/CR models are NOT genuine “Daiwa factory reels”. I’m not saying that makes this is acceptable, I’m just saying that these are lower quality reels than your typical Daiwa products and people shouldn’t be put off the brand based off these reels performance.
Edit: I’m sorry but the nut just came loose is all? Even after using some sort of wrench to tighten it? That is ... odd.

I have a Fuego that I love, and Daiwa is my go to for spinning reels, so I know what you mean. Just definitely a bit frustrating.

Never owned a Daiwa, but if it’s anything like my Lews the nut that holds the handle to the shaft is actually brass and probably wasn’t installed correctly. The handle on my BB1 pro did the same exact thing in less than a month of ownership. Email them and they’ll most likely send you another nut, that is if the threads on the shaft aren’t messed up.

Yeah I'm not sure how this happened. The nut or driveshaft threads have to be stripped for it to fall off with a retainer on it.

That should not happen! However, the CG80 and the CR80 (all the C-80 reels) are not real daiwa products. Those are doyo made reels with daiwa gears as far as I remember. Could be doyo gears though. There’s obviously worse quality control in the doyo factory than in the daiwa factory. Sorry about this! I think you’re better off with a Daiwa Fuego:)!

If you take some fingernail polish and paint the threads, then put the nut on solid. Thee finger nail polish will work like a permant Lock tight. However it will Never come off again, period. you will destroy the nut trying to remove it. You can go to a car part store and see if they have Lock Tight instead. You can then be able to remove the handle if you need to.

Way back when I was a little boy, I started fishing with Diawa reels and I can tell ya, they are all CRAP. I will Never own another Diawa reel. Same goes for Stren fishing line. I’m taking 50 years ago and they’ve probably gotten better, but looking at your photo I’d say “ not by much “.
All I can say is that I have an old Diawa 7700 that I still use and it has taken out a lot of fish. Sorry that you had a bad experience with yours. BTW I bought the reel back in 1978. One of the first 20 LB drag open face reels.
Before that I used a Garcia Mitchel 406 with I still have and use mainly for Fresh water fishing now. Had to replace the Bail spring on it, the Bail guide didn't use just pot metal, but hardened metal for where the line rubs coming in.
Put some lock tight on it
Correct name at parts store is Loctite
I was a sales rep for 8 gears!
