Is there a rule of thumb when selecting line strength for backing, mainline, or leader?

All would be tied together with an improved albrite knot (I'm pretty sure it's called improved).

Any tips on what line should go in what order and how strong are the lines test would be awesome. I plan mostly on mono > braid > floro but will also use floro mainline and either or for backing depending on what is better.

Thanks.

Personally I like backing my reels with braid (30-40lb test ~ 10-12lb test diameter) And then top it off with fluro (15-20lb test) or mono (same as fluro)

Do you do anything to keep the line to the reel? Like electrical tape?

Yes always use electrical tape before spooling. Especially baitcasters

Yeah I always do with braid. Never really crossed my mind with mono.

Backing serves a couple purposes, lots of extra line when needed (big fish), it uses reel capacity so you don't need to spool lots of expensive line and to prevent damage to the spool on your reel if you fight a big fish over a long period (while using mono, which stretches, as your main line.)
Your backing should be at least 2X the breaking strength of your main line. It should also be of smaller diameter, sounds impossible but can be done if you look.
Since this hasn't been covered, backing as the name implies goes in back of the main line, therefore on the reel first.
