I've been wanting to get a new reel that won't be super expensive and that I can use for microfishing, does anyone have any recommendations?

Most of the time I've seen just handlines (with the line wound around a winder <flat stick with a v-notch>). It's not like you're really casting with the micro hooks

But cabelas makes a really small undersspin reel for 18 bucks. https://www.cabelas.com/product/TINYLITE-UNDERSPIN/2851816.uts?productVariantId=5908287&WT.tsrc=PPC&WT.mc_id=GoogleProductAds&WT.z_mc_id1=05147572&rid=20&ds_rl=1252079&ds_rl=1252079

I've had one, and it's fine. It comes prespooled with 4lbs test, just respool it if it's too heavy for you.

Those reels are usually throwaway ones, barely lasting a season. Any cheap 1000 size spinning reel will do, its the rod that makes the difference in casting.

If you want to go with a spinning reel: okuma ceymar 10, shimano sedona 1000fi or Daiwa Fuego LT 1000 D

If you want a BFS (bait finesse system) baitcaster that can throw light stuff: Tsurinoya Spirit Fox, Tsurinoya XF-50 or Fishband GH100 (more expencive alternative: Shimano Scorpion BFS).

If you’re searching for a reel to do some legit microfishing (not with lures) i’d say a cheap spinning reel up to size 2500 will do the job!

They make size 500 reels (smaller than size 1000), and they are pretty much the smallest reels that are commercially manufactured.

Shimano Sahara 500 is the smallest reel I own, and I absolutely love it, super smooth reel with excellent drag (for a Shimano). I have mine spooled with 4lb fluorocarbon, it usually goes on my Ugly Stik eLite 5"6" rod. I frequently use this setup to cast treble flies and small jigs (1/32oz). They go about 10-15ft. I highly recommend treble flies for using flies for non-flyfishing setups, the treble hook makes them more substantial of a lure to cast than single hook flies.

This isn't really microfishing though, just ultralight. I catch all types of panfish and sometimes bass over 1lb with these jigs and treble flies, so I wouldn't classify this as microfishing. I frequently fish with small lures, but not necessarily for small fish. My philosophy is that 'even elephants eat peanuts', and it has done me well. Especially in the spring before the fish are really active, I outfish people who ask me why I am using such a tiny lure.

Note: sorry for whoring the BG on every post, but it is a great reel for the money, plus it comes in size 1500-8000.

That's what I was thinking. Have you fished with a tenkara? I have not, but I've been trying to justify the cost of a new rod. Maybe I'll seek out a used one? Any suggestions?

I have one of those trigger reels , I've used it for catching bream and such it works well for that , but ive set it up and given to my wife for a beginner rod & reel. And she has caught catfish, trout, flounder, and even small reds , beginners luck ? I dont but I'm about to take it back cuz she's making me look bad with it LOL. But with that being said it would be a nice little set-up for quick on the catching... notice I said catching not fishing LOL !!!
