I'm not looking to get rich just make a little extra cash on the side. Does anyone on here make money fishing besides tournaments? I'd be interested in how to get started fishing local tournaments if you have input on that also. I know joining a local club is pretty much the standard protocol for tournaments but I don't have a fancy bass boat. I have a good size Jon boat with only a trolling motor right now.

In some states there are programs that are run through the dfw or another state institution where fisherman can be paid for turning in invasive species. In Oregon on the Columbia river there are drop points where you can turn in Pikeminnows for a standard fee that increases after reaching a certain number of fish and there are even tagged fish that are worth hundreds of dollars if caught. http://www.pikeminnow.org

This is a very good point, I know last year Florida had a bounty program on Lionfish, it's a dangerous fish to catch but can come with a good price. Look around your local natural resource department for any sorts of reward programs for tageting certain fish or go after tagged fish if they have those.

You can also look into becoming a fishing guide.

All that said, you're very unlikely to actually make money fishing.

I believe it's kinda like the Gold Rush days. The miners who got rich are few and far between. The guys SUPPLYING the GEAR got wealthy beyond belief. That kinda makes Johnny Morrison the modern-day version of Levi Strauss, huh ?

Try guiding on a local lake you are dialed in on. Lots of fishing friends on Craigslist that take you fishing for a fee

In some states you can get a commercial license so that you can sell certain fish to any one that wants them. Tournament fishing cost more than you are likely to win in most cases. To come out ahead you'll have to catch more and bigger fish than the top anglers. Try a few at home and see how you score there and if you do well branch out. The money comes from sponsors when you find some. Good luck!!

Everybody gave you some good advice. Check around at fishing stores and find out if they know of any local terniments. As previously stated, you don't need a boat, just a bigger weight at weigh in. If you win, place or show than the boats, tackle and maybe a truck will come from the sponsors. Good luck and let us know how it goes. One day we may be able to brag that we knew a pro when he was just getting started.

I pore and make my own lures and sell a few to pay for my fishing trips. I mainly do bass baits but now that I live in Michigan I am thinking about expanding into walleye rigs and cow bells for trout/salmon. You can buy the molds online at eBay or Barlow's tackle. I have done a lot of business with Barlow's and they are great people to work with. I saw a show about making your own molds and want to try that but just haven't got around to it. I find it is easier to make and sell lures then trying to find a sponsor to fish. Most everyone that can sponsor you has had 100 others present information to them and you have to be in the upper levels to get any of them to even consider you. If you are determined to find a sponsor try looking out said the box and businesses that normally don't have anything to do with the industry. You will have to show them how sponsorship could increase there business and provide them more info about the industry. Just some things I thought about after reading this post. Good luck on your search.

If you are not an experienced angler there is little chance that you will ever come out ahead financially fishing. You can fudge the books but you will still spend more on equipment and fuel than you will ever make.

Most tournaments these days require live fish at weigh in. That means having and maintaining a dependable live well. Dead fish will get you docked. There's stuff to know about tagging fish so you dont end up re-weighing fish when you have five but think you've caught a bigger one and on and on. The sonar units are intimidating. Your boat has to be trustworthy at all times. But the big deal is, you've got to be able to catch five bass every time out, rain or shine. Are you already doing that?
