so i started learning how to use a baitcaster with just the classic bass pro baitcasting reel just because it was pretty cheap and i didn’t want to wreck a nice one some how haha. but now that i’ve learned how to cast properly and everything, i’m not sure what the best brand/style is so i was hoping to get some ideas!

Since you like Shimano you can stick with them. I love all my Shimanos. But if you just want to step up a little more than the BPS the Lews tournament laser classic is a decent reel for $130 at academy.

I use a few shimano 201hg (k) (200hg right hand) $160-$199. I love them they have multiple braking systems to fine tune to your exact lure just a very nice all around reel. Also small and light and reeling is like hot knife thru butter

My favorites are the round Abus in the 4000 to 6000 size. Yeah they are big and bulky compared to the low profile reels, but they don't quit. Contrary to popular belief, they will cast sub 1/2oz lures well too. I have a 4500CS that will throw 3/16oz baits trouble free. I like the fact that parts are so easy to get even for reels decades out of production.

For spinners I'm a big fan of the Penn offerings for the same reasons I am the Ambassadeurs, easily obtainable parts and the ease of user servicing. I've serviced many Daiwa, Shimano, and Abu spinning reels and most of them can be quite complex and often times the schematics don't show proper orientation of some parts. The Penns are very simple by comparison.

Lew's Laser Pro Speed Spool is my reel of choice for the money. Can easily find them new for $90-100 on the regular. I've used the Abu Black/Silver max combos, and while the price point is nice, that Lew's is a massive step up in quality.

I’m a Quantum guy. I’ve owned a reel repair shop for almost 15 years and I’ve seen just about every freshwater reel out there. Quantum PT reels are built well and hold up long term. I have eight Quantum Icon PT baitcasters and I can’t tear them up. The ceramic pawl Quantum uses in their PT reels never wear out. That’s a common issue in a lot of reels. Shimano and Daiwa don’t seem to have the issue but I’ve changed a ton of pawls and work gears in Abu Garcia Revos.

My brands I use are Shimano,Abu Garcia and Lews. Most of mine are Abu Garcias and they work pretty good.I got 2 Ambassadeurs and I love them, those are for my cat fishing poles. Then got 2 low profile ones I use for Bass fishing,Pro Max and Black Max. Lews would be a great option if youre on a tighter budget but they work just as good as any other reel and some can get pricey but you can find a good one thats affordable. The one I got is a SpeedSpool, forgot the model, but its probably my most trusted reel. I never have issues with it and it works great. Daiwa seems to be a popular one as well thats also more affordable but have no personal experience with them but I seen many people talk highly of those,I might even get me one soon.

For you in your case i would strart with a ABU BLACK MAX COMBO from wally world for $49-59 bucks and its an excellent set that will last you for years to come, and you can catch bid fish also.from experience I've caught redfish pushing 20-25 lbs. as long as you have the drag set right you can catch bigger fish than that i would try this it of course it would justbe the fish swimming by that took the bait loland thats happened more than once fishing on the Mississippi gulf coast. I caught a # 48lb. 48 and a half inch redfish on an old ambassador 5000 with#14 lb.test line with cut bait at night... Thought i had a whale LOL...
