In regards to a lead sinker putting a ding in your fly rod: I have used the tiny strips of lead (comes in a pack that looks like a matchbook) pull off a strip, break it to the size you need and wind around your line. Used them for years when nymph fishing and never a ding. Available in any fly shop.
I normally just put lead into the fly when I tie it. And I have a second reel with sinking line on it. But all this does not work in such a way as counting down when a lure with a spin casting reel is used. So I never really know just how deep the streamer winds up. What is you technique?
