I tried one when they first came out about 50 years ago. I took it off after the first year, I think it slowed the boat down a little, but, I never run them wide open, so, I'm not sure. I left it back in Caledonia.

Same experience I had with my Outboard. More drag. They are designed to lift the boat up on plane. I think they can help for high HP outboards because it should also keep the propeller in the water on wakes and waves reducing cavitation of propeller in rough water.

Will do. These are ALL PROPS. Jets are strictly designed to operate in shallow water. They will function in deep water but a jet ( internal impeller ) loses 1/3 or more horsepower ( speed / efficiency ) as compared to props. None of the boats at this competition and family oriented event will be allowed to run jets. I can 100% visualize what your dad's hot rod boat was.

I watched IHBA ( International Hot Boat Association ) break the 225MPH record at Castaic Lake long ago. It was a top fuel hydro boat with a Fighter Jet Capsule for the Pilot / Captain. IHBA has boat races with all sorts of classes Inboards with jets and props etc.

Memorial Day Outboard Boat Races in Newburg Oregon is strictly Outboards. I enjoy spectating. Seeing all that cash that is all for fun invested and It doesn't cost but a 1/4 tank of fuel and a lunch etc to go.

I miss that hot rod on the water.
Miss racing it we 100%octain in it.
And I have had it one or two times come out of the water racing against another's boat's.
That will scare ðŸ˜ą the hell out of you !!
Young dum and stupid ðŸĪŠ
I was luck both times the boat hit the water just right !! I must of had Angel's with me both times.
My nephew owns it now ,he's in his forties.

It was in the 1960s and my partner and I had just opened and run an Evinrude dealership in Gainesville, TX. At the 4th of July event on Texhoma, we took a couple of runabouts to demonstrate and represent our line of boats.

Sometime during this event, we decided to take one of the boats out for a demo run. As we slowly moved out to open water, it seemed our boat was slow and sluggish. Upon checking the unit out, it was obvious there was too much water in the boat. The drain plug was not installed, we had been taking on water all along! I go back and plug it in. We then had to cruise around for a lot longer than needed, just to drain this water from the boat. We didn't tell anyone, but it could have been an embarrassing moment for us. Just Sayin...RJS

So you plugged it in but then it drained? The way to drain a boat that the Captain or someone else didn't check the plug is to leave it out. Get the boat moving fast enough that the drain hole is above the wake just behind the stern to drain. If it was plugged the water will not drain. I did once in my 1962 Wooden Clipper Craft with 1959 Evinrude Lark. I got the majority of the ( my fault ) water out by keeping it WOT without the plug in.

It may keep the prop in water when moving along at a good clip. It may help raise the back of boat ( decrease time needed to get on plane ). That is what they are designed to do. Worth a try.

Water is a little less predictable than a road for hot rodding. I remember a bass boat on the Willamette River that had a dark colored guy flat out flying. I knew he was headed in to huge wakes ( dusk hour ) He hit beginning of the wakes and his bow ended up pointing downward into another large wake. He had cut the throttle off. ended up holing on to the chair on bow. He turned White as ghost got himself back in the cockpit and proceeded at a very low speed. I never laughed but I am sure he was hurt and needed a new diaper when he got to the trailer at whatever boat ramp he launched out of.

I put one on my 115hp Yamaha a month ago as I was having trouble getting on plane with 4 people in boat, it helped get on plane tremendously.

In a second it can happen!! And you have no control but hope your boat hits the water right and your quick enough and give it trolled. 😉
Have a great weekend a great Holiday and a safe one.
