Went ultralight jigging in 56 degree Turnmill Pond this evening on a warm, sunny day with a moderate west wind. Caught and released 8 pickerel to 16” and two yellow perch to 11” with 1/8 oz black leadhead jigs and 2” twister tails on 4 lb test line. Landed a pickerel on my first cast of the day. Took a pic of an osprey diving into the pond.

Sounds like a great day Bands, thanks for the pictures. I love watching the birds hunt fish.

I have only seen raptors hit the water for a fish twice in real life. Once an osprey and another time a bald eagle. It’s an awesome sight to see! Unfortunately, never had the time to set up for a picture though.

I probably see 4 or5 a year, but never catch a good picture. The Eagles rarely make a splash, just snatch them with their talons.

When they hit the water to grab a fish at 20 miles an hour or faster, water does tend to spray up in the air, aka splash. So cool to see!

I notice that the Eagles dive down further away, and glide just above the water. Then snatch the fish, often a Trout, that's swimming near the surface, and pull up to return to a tree top. It's a beautiful sight.

The eagle that I saw snatched a bass. Not sure if it was dead or alive, probably floating though. It was very choppy waters from a lot of boat action out on Wawasee lake. We watched it circle around and then come down. An unusual site in pretty busy water.

Bands you are on top of the game my man! Do you have any advice for color selection? That’s one area I am definitely weak in. Thanks man!

For me, purple is the best color for bass. Black is best at night and on cloudy days. Pickerel and carp like yellow. Sometimes color is very important. Crappies like chartreuse.
