Hey there 🖐🖐. I guess I'll bore you with a little background.
My grandfather wanted a grandson, however he got little ole me 🤷‍♀️... I started fishing the Rouge River at 4 years old. My granddad was a professional fisherman, and owned his own lure companies "West Lure", and Black Angler" run out of Gold Beach, OR. I helped him assemble his lures during the summer when we weren't fishing. He also taught me to shoot, hunt, and use power tools, but that's besides the point.
I've fished freshwater my whole life, and love it, but a few years back I moved to Long Beach, CA. Not really any prime freshwater fishing, mostly stocked man made lakes, which really aren't my thing. My boyfriend loves to fish the local saltwater jettys and piers. Therefore I decided if you can't beat em, join em....
I enjoy fishing no matter where I have to cast my line. He sweetly tried to teach me how to do certain rigs for certain fish, and identified all the baits and lures to use. However I basically applied what I already knew to what I observed everyone else doing, and proceeded to out fish him every trip.
Unfortunately, I am positive that there are things that I should be doing that im not, which im sure would make things easier. Im just really hard headed and don't like to appear that I don't know what I'm doing. Yeah, kinda bratty, I know.
My boyfriend has recently taken an unscheduled "VACATION" for a few months, so I am now fishing temporarily solo. My favorite place to fish is Pier J in LB. Im not sure why, the fishing isn't fantastic, there's much better places apparently. However I've grown fond of being able to pull up, climb down a few rocks, and put my line in. Easy peasy.
However lately I have not been catching much. Im using a 2 bait bottom rig, and then I also cast using bait or a lure. With the bottom rig I usually only pull up the random croaker, and casting only seems to produce mackerel (great bait), smelt, or baby bass, pics to follow....
I know there's bigger Bass, and several different species of fish that occupy those waters, I guess it's time to admit I need some help. I've used every kind of bait, even power bait and similar products, with the same result.
I could use some much needed advice to help me catch something bigger and badder. Please!!!!!

The fish in the bottom picture looks like bait. I probably would have hooked it between the eyes or in the tail section and fish it for awhile. I'm on the East Coast so I can't advise you. Good Luck

Are you riding a board (surf ) or are you so bored you're casting a line indoors?
