Another broken St Croix rod

Back in January I made a post about breaking a St Croix rod while catching a 6.3 pound brown trout. I was pleased to report that St Croix replaces the rod within a week. This week I broke the replacement rod on a small maybe 1 pound bass. I again contacted St Croix and again they are replacing the rod. However I decided to up grade the rod this time. I only had to pay the difference in the price of the two rods plus shipping. Once again I am impressed with their customer service. However if this one breaks I may start looking at other rods. LOL

Broke in almost the identical place

You may need to examine your fishing methods.

Charlykilo, that is a fair statement. However swinging a one pound fish from the water to the bank shouldn’t break a rod. I have broken rods in the past and most times it has been my fault. I don’t believe my methods had anything to do with this situation

That certainly should not have happened on a 1# fish. Glad they are backing their rod again!

I've never broke a Ugly Stick. But I also never used a St Croix to compare the two. Hope the upgrade works for you PJ. Its hard to switch from something you like.

Do you have to send the old rod back? I have a reason for asking

I really like my St Croix rods. I have never owned an Ugly Stick but I have a buddy that will only buy them.

The reason I ask is I repair rods just to see if I can, I have one now that I have been looking for the right insert to fix it. Just so happens I was fishing 🎣 at a local pond and found a 4 foot piece of a rod someone had broken and left on the ground. The tip will fit inside a tip of the other rod that's broken and I can glue it in make it whole. Then the rod is usable and sometimes almost as good as new. As RJS says just saying 🙄

Well P J, I was gonna suggest it's cold weather related, then looked online and saw they're manufactured in Wisconsin. I suspect a flaw in the blanks of that particular size at that location. It may be that they've identified the problem but it's too expensive to fix it, or too costly in terms of time to interrupt the production process to fix. Just replacing a few rods may be the best way out. I worked most of my career in the aviation sector, and that just wouldn't cut it for us. Fishing rods, not likely to produce catastrophic failure resulting in loss of human lives.

To be perfectly honest, only their top of the line models are manufactured here. Their lower end rods are manufactured in Mexico…not that there is anything wrong with that, just the way it is.

As I understand it it is easy to tell if the rods are USA made or Mexico The rods made in the USA have a 15 year warranty and the Mexico rods have a 5 year warranty. I was told the upgrade is USA made and comes with the 15 year warranty.
