Welcome aboard Steve. We have a lot of stagers from Connecticut. Give them some time to respond. If not try again in the morning.

Fredfish is on the road today. He'll be back in CT tomorrow. When he checks in he may contact you. There are items also who might chime in.

First of all Steve, Welcome to the Stage. Great to have ya aboard.
Here's an idea or two : I've used online maps and Google earth to find some really isolated gems. Since I am no longer able to tramp down wooded trails, I'll have to do this vicariously through you and others now.
When you locate a spot that looks promising, Don't forget to check for legal access via the D E E P, municipality, and property owners. Don't be too disappointed to find trash when ya finally arrive @ your destination, just carry in a trash bag and bring it out when you leave. I've made friends with property owners this way over the years, and it does them, and everyone else a favor, and seals the deal for future access.
If you have a drone, this would be another way to discover what you seek. Get moving on this quickly if you opt to do it, before plants leaf up and obscure your overhead viewing ability.
Also try stopping for a look-see when traveling on local roads and two lane state highways where they cross over a stream or creek. Just might have trailhead or unmarked path close by that will lead somewhere good. The main problem here is parking your vehicle. Maybe you could buddy up with someone to minimize this problem, or bring a bicycle and park your car somewhere nearby ?
Keep in touch via the Stage, and maybe we can give you some local guidance.
I hope you're a patient person, cuz this is gonna turn up lots of disappointments as well as the good stuff.
Good Luck ! nutz.

Welcome to the Stage Steve. Nutz has made some excellent suggestions for locating out of the way places. Unfortunately much of Connecticut's water access is now in private hands. There's some river and stream access in state parks or forests, but many require hiking in. Any state parks with ponds or lakes have good access, but are crowded on weekends, as are the public lakes. Weekdays are much more enjoyable. I fish out of my boat 95% of the time so I'm sorry I don't have too much bank fishing info for you.
Check out Mount Tom, Lake Waramaug, Black Rock, Mansfield Hollow, and Bigelow Hollow state parks for lake access. Good Luck, Tight Lines, and remember that we love pictures.

One thing about Bigelow Hollow state park in Union ct you need a state parking permit . Out of state is$10.00 per day. I was told last year by a state warden . Since it’s on the Mass boarder .

I don't know about that Soup, all Connecticut residents now have free access to all state parks, due to a surcharge added to all motor vehicle registrations. They started that several years ago. Only out of state vehicles have to pay to park.
It's called the "Passport to Parks Program".

I like the housatonic river off of Rt 7 around Kent. Going north take a left at the monument, go over the river. If you go right on skiff mountain rd it follows the river for a long way. If you go left on Schaticook rd it goes past an Indian reservation ( no casino yet just a few modest homes) again a long way along the river and ends at bulls bridge. Very peaceful with a full spectrum of species depending on where you are.
Great place to get away from it all.

Good Idea. Sounds like nobody should buy any fuel in your state unless they live there. Hopefully all the Rangers in your State Parks Retire before I ever spend a dime on fuel there.

You might be able to swing both. Gas is 3 dollars a gallon in Ct.

Didn't they remove some tax on gas? I remember Ct prices used to be higher than NJ, now they aren't.

Yeah Kandy, but it was only .25 per gallon. They're fazing it back in though. At my station it's $3.46 today.

Yes. The governor removed the state tax completely for relief when the prices were high. Now he’s putting it back a little each month. We used to have the highest tax in the nation until everyone caught up. No more. I always bought gas in Ft Lee when you guys were cheap and I was in NJ.
Our gov lowered the income tax permanently. Thank God for a warm winter with heating oil going from 3-5.25 a gallon.

Dam Fred 3-3.10 here if you shop. There’s a Dino station by the motor vehicle. 15 cents less a gallon with the app. Makes it 2.99.

Ours varies about .20 day to day , Mark. There's only 3 stations in town, 2 name brands, and a no name. Of course the no name is cheapest, but it's also the smallest, only 4 pumps. Not worth waiting to save a nickel or a dime.
