Hey . A guy has approached me to re- paint a few Norman dd22 crankbaits for him . 2 of the baits are the“ HD “ models , and 1 is a “ suspend “ model . I don’t think there are too many of those models around anymore , but I’m not sure . And I certainly don’t want to mess these up . My question is what is the best way to remove the old paint / finish as these are beat up . I’m kinda scared to use acetone , because it could damage the plastic . My understanding is Norman used an automotive clear coat finish on these lures . Anybody got a viable suggestion ? Thanks .
My 2cents....

Yeah Chuck, I wouldn’t use acetone. I think I’d lightly sand and then prime them.

Check with an automotive paint store.

Try contacting the manufacturer and ask if acetone, xylene, toluene, respectively, will dissolve the body. Also try simple green. If the manufacturer is no longer in business, try dabbing paint remover/stripper, and remove the old paint little areas at a time. Finally, lightly sand and then prime. Good luck.

Get another old plug to experiment with. You don't want to jump in and then discover it is the wrong solvent. That way not matter what happens to the test model, you aren't likely to make the same mistake twice. Just Sayin...RJS

Hi Chuck, I'd leave the old paint. Rubbing alcohol or an alcohol wipe to clean them. Not harsh and will degrease, clean them for a good bond.

Take pictures of them first, find the correct colors if redoing them in same colors, no to acetone, sand lightly and smooth existing finish as much as possible, automotive paint probably best since so much plastic in todays cars. Best of luck to you.

Sport . I used some of the alchohol cleaner ( smells like whiskey ) that I buy for airbrush cleanup and tried it on one of my own Norman’s . Then shot a prime coat on the lure . Waited for 2 days . There is no cracking , flaking or dimples . NOW , the only thing holding me back is the lure I used was an opaque ( solid ) 2 toned lure . The lures belonging to this guy ALL have a clear coated finish with glitter in the clear . Lol I guess I’m just gonna have to do the whiskey rub on one of them and go for it ...

I concur, the hot thinners are absolutely not good for most plastics. You might try some of the orange citrus paint removers that work better than you expect and tend to me much kinder to anything that isn't paint. I think those don't affect plastics but proceed with caution.

Sounds good. I wonder about sprinkling glitter on the wet base coat. Then shoot with clear.

I have had exceptional success with nail polish from the Dollar Store. I have at least a half-dozen that are a "clear with glitter", in various glitter colors. The one with RED glitter is my fave, but the blue, the silver, the gold (have 2 bottles with 2 different SIZES of glitter), the orange, even black...all have good adhesion and so far, are plenty durable. Have not experienced any degradation of surface, despite the solvent (acetone) of the polish, since it dries so very quickly.
Cheap and easy.
BTW...Harbor Freight has a sweet little weighted holder with 2 articulating arms with alligator clips and a magnifying glass...less than $10, if I recall. Great helper for painting lures.
