Been cold enough for the lakes to develope a layer of ice. Been keeping an eye out for the first brave souls to venture out! I really like living, so don’t like to push it. Mother Nature was very cooperative today, temptation setting in. 40 degrees, full sun, no wind, hmmm? Ventured out from the house with auger in hand to check things out. Found 3 inches near shore, 4 inches at 30-50 yards. Gonna grab some waxies and venture a little further tomorrow. Hoping to find us some gills or crappies under this early ice! Getting fish hungry! Will let y’all know!

The bride and I were watching the over anxious fisherpersons venture out from the landing for a week! Still open water on the bay where we live. Today, they worked themselves out to where it just froze over, drilled a hole and then all 5 of them huddled around to stare down the hole! If it’s that thick, drive your dang 4 wheeler out there cuz it’s the same weight! Boneheads! I assure you, my wife won’t even stand next to me on the ice!

I've seen that too. They all gingerly walk out one at a time, then they all stand together in a circle.DUH! Good luck if you get out.
Be careful. I don't ice fish but if I did I wouldn't try yet.
I know first ice can provide the best fishing, but I can wait!
I am anxious to start ice fishing this season as well...but I'll be waiting for at least 7 inches before I head out...even on foot without a rig (ATV or snowmobile). Good luck when your season starts, and as several have mentioned...please do be very careful as the ice is just getting set up in many Northern locales...
The attached chart is a pretty good guideline that I have found to be reliable....although the body weight of that guy in the mouse brown overcoat is not listed! Not sure what they assume as an average weight of a fisherperson and the gear. I consider a snowmobile, full of petrol, to be around the 600 pound mark.
