Yes, to all that. In addition, I am not going to spend $700, $800, or $1,000 for the privilege of wearing a gimmick in my ears that may or may not work well! Or, for that matter even if they do!
Yes, I would like to hear clearly what our preacher has to say each Sunday. Yes, my wife gets very frustrated at me by having to repeat louder everything she has to say to me. I have gotten somewhat more adept at reading lips, but not yet good enough to replace hearing.
But at this stage of my life, I am somewhat set in my ways, as you might guess. There is a saying about “fooling some of the people some of the time, but you can never fool all the people all the time!” Well, I am at the point I am not trying to fool anyone at any time.
Pardon me, but I have come to the belief that most hearing aid companies are doing a flim-flam act and their products are never what they claim, not worth a 1/10 of what they are charging. You see, I have been on the other side of this equation and knows what goes on in the way of packaging a product, and pricing it. The S.O.B.’s don’t give a hoot about anything except making as much profit as they can squeeze out of an unsuspecting public!
In my humble opinion the Food and Drug Commission could take a more active role in protecting the public, but since they probably have a hand and glove relationship, that will never happen.
Now that I have spews forth a lot of negative venom, if you would be so kind and have something to post, I will take it under advisement. Just because I may be mean to others, I appreciate and value your contributions. Just Sayin…RJS

I agree with you on this. All hearing aids are amplifiers. If your hearing is not to damaged they will help. I bought a set and was told that they would amplify what I couldn’t hear but not what I did hear. After guaranty expired they admitted that they were amplifiers. They don’t work for me as my hearing is to messed up. Cocklear implants are supposed to be better. Medicare will pay for this if you meet their criteria.

Some are more than a simple amplifier. Some can amplify a range of frequencies more then others, so for me where my high frequency hearing is shot it can amplify those I don't hear as well a little more.

Hi RJ, I saw your other post, I have similar symptoms which I attribute to hay fever, and/or issues with my glasses. I have heard that people with tinnitus hearing aids can amplify the tinnitus

Mine came from the VA and they work great. In new aids they program the software to meet your problem.

I'm 86 years old and have had great luck with hearing aids from Costco.
They have given me excellent advice and service for two decades.

I have a dandy case of tinnitus thanks to my time in the Air Force working as a crew chief on fighter jets. Since it's service related, the VA gives me hearing aids. I don't have completely diminished hearing, I've mostly lost the ability to hear higher frequencies. The hearing aids I got from the VA amplify the highs without as much effect on lower frequencies. They help a lot, it makes speech easier to understand. It used to be that when I watched a movie, I'd miss out on half of what was said. Now I miss probably 10 or 15%.

I've run into a new problem, though. My Wife is losing some of her hearing and WON'T ADMIT IT! Now when I walk into the room it seems like the TV is painfully loud until I snatch out my hearing aids! And if some woman is pushing a stroller with a high-pitched squeaky wheel, my hearing aids pick that up and make it painful.

My first adventure with hearing help was a behind-the-ear hearing aid from Harbor Freight. This is the same or almost the same as the ones you see advertised for $50 or less. Mine cost $15. It was WORTHLESS, it was just an audio amplifier and to me it seemed like it amplified the background noise far more than the sounds that I needed to hear.

It was just recently in the news that the law has changed so that you no longer need a prescription to get hearing aids. That might bring prices down through the magic of a free market economy, but it'll probably also open up chances for shysters to sell hearing aids that don't do more than the Harbor Freight ones. Don't even consider buying them unless you have a hearing test in the soundproof booth with earphones, so that the hearing aids can be programmed to boost sounds at the frequencies where you need help the most.

Beyond that, the bells and whistles are nice. My Brother got his at Costco for a better price than he found elsewhere, and he opted for hearing aids that use bluetooth to connect to his phone and TV set. He can hear either of those through his hearing aids.

I have been wearing hearing aids for over 25 years. I have used NuEar. I signed up with VA and my hearing is so bad they got me 2 pairs so I would have a back up pair. 1 pair is Resound and the other is Phonak. I have been using the PHONAK FOR ABOUT A YEAR and really like them. They work through my cell phone also. They won't help you until you get your Mineers Disease taken care of. As you are a veteran I would see if VA can help you. Most places offer free hearing tests. Take your wife if you get a hearing test so you can see if you can hear her. Hearing aids are not as good as what God gave you, but they do help. Unfortunately they seem to amplify sounds like coughing when you are trying to listen to someone speaking. They have been a big help to me and I recommend you try them.

Oh Gawd yes! I was 18 and worked at a paper mill. The machines were a continuous roar, so loud the floor shook. No man worth his salt would wear sissy hearing protection. So we went home after 8 hour shift with bells ringing in our ears.
