Will was a Batchlor cowboy that lived and worked on a ranch whose bunkhouse was about 20 miles from town. One day, while fixing the barbed wire suddenly snapped and a staple was thrown into his face and damage his left eye. He went to the doctor but it was too late, noting could be done to save that eye. He didn’t want to pay the money for a new glass eye and instead whittled out of a piece of oak a remarkably good copy. He even painted it so it had the same blue iris and pupil as his other eye.
It was along about November and there was posted all over town and in the newspaper there would be a pre-Thanksgiving square dance in town. Now he was one lonesome cowpoke and desired female companionship, in fact it wasn’t beyond even marriage if he found the right girl.
The night of the event there was a big crowd at the hall, and the square dance caller had all the girls line up along one wall and opposite them the guys, all slick shaven and with their hair well oiled and combed lining up on the other.
Now among these girls was Anna Mae, who had just turned 19 and this was her first dance. She had a very slight hare-lip, but otherwise was a fine specimen of the female gender. She had gotten up enough nerve to attend for the very first time.
When the caller said, “Choose your partners!” there was a mad scramble as the cowpokes rushed to be sure to find the girl of their choice. When the dust had cleared there was only Anna Mae and Will remaining unattached. He walks over very slowly, timidly and said, “May I have this dance?”
Anna Mae looks up at him, all 6’ 2” and well-built cowboy, someone she had always dreamed would one day sweep her off her feet. She blurted out, “Would I?” “Would I?” But feeling totally ashamed of his wooden prosthesis, he stumbles backward and said, “harelip, harelip! Just Sayin…RJS

My daddy used to tell that story and I used to go to dances all the time and watch guy's so shy and timid to ask a girl to dance. I'd say, look at them?? They want ya to ask! Oh no they're too pretty 😍 Ok I'll get two girl's, walked over you two beautiful girls wanna learn to line dance? See you dummy, just ask one willing and ready to cut a rug? And finally he danced with one. It's not like you're asking to marry, just dance.
