A Really Good Feelin

Somewhere around my 60th birthday, I decided what I wanted as a gift was to hire a guide and go fishing in Lake Sabine with my wife. We made arrangements and went over the day before, had a leisurely seafood dinner and spent the night in a local motel. We got up early the next morning to meet our guide who from long experience had never skunked us!

Now the wind was a little stronger than usual and was a factor in keeping up with schools of trout who were attacking schools of shrimp, forcing them to the surface. While both the guide and I could cast far enough to reach them, Jean could not, and if we had cranked the motor it would have dispersed the entire group.

So after about thirty minutes of this, the guide asked if we would like to catch some catfish? We agreed that was fine, so he bought some dead shrimp and we ran up the ship channel and tied up to a grain elevator where shelled corn was blowing off the structure into the water and the catfish were just lazily waiting to be fed. We fished the shrimp about six inches off the bottom and caught perhaps thirty catfish, mostly around two pounds, but some as large as five pounds. We finally left them still biting and motored down to a boat ramp that had a handy fish cleaning facility.

While the guide was fileting the fish, I walked down to check of a family trying to catch crabs off the bulkhead. I learned the father had been injured in an oil field accident and was on disability. I went back and gathered up over half of the catfish filets that the guide had already cleaned and bagged and took them down and gave them to this family. I believed that they were not crabbing for recreation but for food. They were having a hard time and both parents were more than grateful.

I wanted to help, I was sorry that I couldn’t do more. Just Sayin…RJS

It was an act of kindness RJ and probably restored his faith a little bit that good people are still around, I regularly give fish when I catch a bunch to many.
