Hi everyone, I’m StineMullen2260. I’ve never been crab snaring before and would like to learn how. Stores are too expensive so I figured I’d go back to the basics…give a man a fish, feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, feed him for a lifetime. Can anyone tell me where to either buy a snare or how to make one? What’s the best place to go? I heard that Pacifica Pier was good. Any others? Thanks for your help.

Well Stine you can find a lot of different types of crab 🦀 snares online or various sporting good stores
I personally would stay away from Pacifica Pier only thing left there is all the undersized ones you would have to start fishing for crabs 🦀 there at the beginning of the season
You might want to check out some of the ocean beaches pay attention to the natural eddies and where the pockets of calm water sits between waves
Good luck 👍🍀

I am not sure of the regulations in California. Be sure to check before you go. For rock and Dungeness crab, I have done well just balling up a big wad of dissuaded mono fishing line from a reel. I tie a tight loop around the center of the wad, attach a weight and a chicken leg. I use a long handled net as they often get free when removed from the water. If legal, I have found the casting small 9x9 plus or minus (when closed) spring loaded two flat panel traps work better in the surf than a snare.

Hey StineM, here’s a link for Amazon, you might have to copy and paste. It’s a snare designed to be casted with your fishing rod. They work, but you might have to lay out the snare loops after receipt because they get all crunched in shipping. There’s others on Amazon as well.

I guess my ball of mono is not going to help there. Thanks for the info. Are the 9x9 closing traps legal there?

Not sure? As usual C A. writes a book instead of a paragraph.

Good grief. Does California have specialty lawyers to interpret the regulations. Do those lawyers have to be in the crabbers immediate possession? I thought Washington was ridiculous, but California Has become insane.

Like you said, the regulations do not even address the casting traps or star traps for that matter as far as I can tell.
