I read a lot and try to fish once a week or so. I've read that the ideal water temperature for largemouth bass is 65 degrees. I also read several times that they do not like sunlight and will stay in the shaded areas protected from direct sunlight. I have also caught large mouth bass in South Carolina in July at 1:00 pm in BRIGHT sunlight in about one foot of water where I'm certain the water temperature is in the high 80 degree range. I've caught bass in downpouring rain and in water that is 40 degrees. I had the opportunity to talk with Hank Parker one night. He said as he laughed a little, "Nobody has it figured out. If they did, they'd be catching all the fish and winning all the tournaments. You never know. Just get your system and try everything until something works. Sometimes, nothing works. But when nothing works and you're sure that fish are there, go off somewhere else for a while, an hour or so, and come back and try it all again. Nobody knows exactly what fish like all the time. I think fish are probably like people. Some like pizza. Some like hotdogs. Some don't. Some like to eat breakfast. Some don't. some like warm weather. Some like cooler weather." A friend of mine told me that a wise old man told him that the best time to fish is when you can go fishing. He is a meticulous note keeper and is seriously methodical about EVERYTHING. He's determined that there is no correlation with weather, moon phases, barometric pressure, or time of day when catching fish. I'll have to agree.

Ideal conditions are when your boat works, you didn’t forget your equipment, and you are catching fish. Oh, and it’s not raining. I don’t like fishing in the rain.
