Fishing from a kayak in the inland waterway way North Carolina . Think I should be looking at a 6 to 6.5 foot rod with a somewhat short handle. I think I want to look for a 2500 to 3000 reel which will accommodate 30lb braid.
Sound good or what do you think.

Another good resource would be fishyacker. I’ve no experience with fishing out of a yak but he does it almost exclusively.

Seems logical to me. The shorter handle will allow for better clearance from your vest (you should be wearing).

Go for it! Only you can really be the judge of whether the R&R are suitable in an Yak. And if that isn't satisfactory it is a good excuse to buy another. Just Sayin...RJS

One of the things with fishing in a kayak is rod length. When your line gets looped on the rod tip you need to be able to reach it without dunking your reel in the water. My favorite rod is the Ugly Stik GX2 in 6 or 6 1/2 foot. This is an amazing rod for the price. The curse of a surf/kayak fisherman is that I own 2 Daiwa BGs a 4000 and 5000 and a Penn Spinfisher V 4500 for surf fishing all too big for the kayak. I'm going to buy a new BG 2500 or 3000 for the kayak this year. The BG is like the GX2 a great value.
Here are some links from my website if you want to use them.

I don’t kayak fish anymore but you are spot on with your thinking on rod length and handle length.
I’d imagine you are going to be doing some tight quarters work , ( as opposed to offshore) and you will appreciate the fish ability of a rod you are describing.

Welcome to the Stage Sandy. I would recommend a six foot rod with a long cork handle. It’s easier to handle when you catch a big fish and are trying to get it close enough to net it. BTW, I’d recommend a large landing net with a longer handle. A fold up landing net does very well. Have you added an anchor trolley, or maybe it came with one. You’ll appreciate having that when the wind kicks up and you want it at your back. Hope these tips help. Stay safe and tight lines.🎣🎣🎣 Don’t forget your flotation device, or PPE.

Thanks for your insight . Yup have an anchor trolly, and just installed an anchor wizard. Probably just use the trolly with my anchor pole. I’m trying to get there . I’ll end up with any bunch of gadgets and no fish…. but I’ll have fun

Sandy, if you’re like me you’ll never get there 100%. My spine gave out so that’s why I don’t have mine anymore.
