I want to plan a week long trip to fish the John Day River this spring for bass but have no idea where to go.
I am planning on fishing from the bank and sleeping in my truck at night, or a motel if one is near.
Also easy access to the water as I don't get around like I used to.
Any advice from John Day river regulars would be appreciated... Thanks

I’d look at Spray, Kimberly and Service Creek. Those are all in the Mitchell Oregon area. Lots of good bass fishing up around there and good bank access.

I could meet you for coffee and look at maps anytime if your interested. Some claim to only catch tiny small mouth there. I will let you know what we have caught many dinner fish on as well as Channel Cats. Have had well over 100 fish days ( each guy / wives ) plenty were large. Many times we let them go unless having a fish Fry. I have seen it change there for sure. Floods as well as too many people changing it.

I've caught so many fish on the John Day in the Crane Prairie area that I became exhausted from hauling them all in (channel cats, too). In July and August...

Me TOO on the John Day River. Crane Prairie Reservoir?

Were they little? Just curious.

The largemouth I caught were fair to middlin'. I was actually down on the river more toward the Columbia - in Blaylock Canyon, really. Never been to the reservoir, but I've heard good things.
