I live in Vancouver, Washington about 10 miles south of Portland, Oregon, just across the Columbia River.

My preferred fishing is Tenkara - I have 10', 12', and 13.5' poles. I also fish for salmon and steelhead on our many rivers in WA and OR. The Pacific Coast is about 1.5 hours away, so I do some surf fishing and crabbing over there from time to time. I keep WA and OR licenses and tags, so have the flexibility to go where I hear the creatures are.

Also do some clamming and crawdad picking, stuff like that. Mostly, though, it's nice trout and some bass using the Tenkara rods.

Thanks for a great forum - I really enjoy reading about fishing in all parts of our great country.

Darin

I agree with your enthusiasm for this region and this website.

I will be honest though. I am south east of you.

I do a lot of the exact stuff you do maybe we can fish or crab together one of these years.

Ah, cool! In Oregon or farther south/east? One of my favorite places to go is the Bend area.

Greetings Darin. Welcome to the Stage.
It’s good to see another SW Washington angler join in. I live just East of you on the Washougal River. I can report that the Steelhead fishing this winter has been quite spotty, and not looking like it will improve much on this stream. I fish my drift one to two times a day. I’ll let you know if things improve.
The razor clamming is fantastic right now if you have a chance to get out. Another week of digging is coming up soon!

Ah, yes, I grew up in Camas, so the Washougal is my natural environment. I mostly hit the swimming hole near the Christmas tree place. I catch a lot of trout there in the summer.

Yes, razor clamming would be fantastic! The last time we went, there were too many people - tried up near Mocrocks. We ended up getting pushed into the reservation and then the forest before picking our way home. It was a nice drive, but took way, way too long. :-)

Your probably referring to the drift that is known as “The Big Eddy”. It’s a great winter Steelhead hole with bobber and jig, or hardware in the tailout. You need to get out and give it a go!
For clams we’ve been going to the Long Beach Peninsula out of Ocean Park on the North end. The clams are quite plentiful and good size.

Glad your still doing good on them Maniac. I looked at the info and it looks like dusk for this week. I see some in a month or few weeks that may be a little more light still.

You ever heard or seen of anyone using salt on our Pacific Razors to get them to push their way out of sand on their own?

Yes, we clammed again on Sunday. You can find plenty of clams 2 hours before low tide.
We haven’t had to break out the lanterns. The latest we’ve finished our limits was around 4:00. It usually takes about 20-30 minutes. I take longer than the rest of my family because I am selective and only dig on the largest show.
I’ve seen the videos of people using salt on the Atlantic clams on YouTube but have never seen anyone trying it on our pacific clams on our beaches. I am fascinated by it.

Me too. Sure would be neat to not have any chance of breaking them EZ on the arms and everything.

I may get down there for the next one in few weeks or whenever it is. Nice to not need lantern and not heavy rain.

The next one is scheduled for Jan. 29-Feb. 3. WDFW should confirm some time next week.
Costco at Warrenton has clam guns with the suction release valve on the side for $60.
They are aluminum, large diameter, easy to push and a breeze to pull. I have yet to nick a clam after using it for two limits.

Guns with larger base area then narrow down. I have used several types. Shovels too.

The dates I saw said potential. Your saying they may add next week too? Less people? Quota?

No, the dates were set last fall. The WDFW sends out a verification that they are going to allow harvest on those dates after checking for toxic blooms or contamination.
There haven’t been any closures this winter.

Strange this is what I found. I am wondering where do I go for information you have?
