I have a ridiculous amount of extra rod's and reels. After 15 years of guiding with people leaving their gear rather than paying to ship it home, I currently have about 100 to 150 left. Some of the rods are good some need repair. I have started taking two extra rod and reels with me when I go anywhere I might contact kids on the bank. When I see a kid watching others and clearly wanting to fish (You will know with a short conversation) I just give him or her rod rigged with float weight and #8hook. (be sure to include a note with each rod, so the kid does not take a whooping for stealing when he gets home. I explain where and how to get bait and let them go at it. It only takes a few minutes and puts the rod and reel where it belongs. Don't be concerned about the quality. If it will work, it will catch panfish and reasonable cats. Remember, many of us started with a cane pole. I take two as it seems I run into brother sister combos regularly. Give it thought. It is a great way to clean the shop and put dust collectors to use.

What a nice thing to do. You are blessed to be in that position.

That stuff caused a problem for me once but didn't prevent me from still doing it. Kid at a derby was having trouble with a Snoopy outfit, got him going, but problem persisted, pickup pin on reel was worn, and I had a nice Johnson spincaster in my truck, got it and gifted it to him. His Dad went nuts, started screaming about he could buy anything the kid needed, and got really aggressive with me. Kept my kool for a while, but eventually asked him why if that was so, how come he bought that cheap piece of junk for his son.
That sure didn't help. His wife intervened, and calmed things down, and told the boy to thank me and he could keep it and continue fishing. Seemed like that would be the end of it, but after I moved away to help with refreshments, he confronted me ad promised to kick my @$$ . Attempted the most pitiful roundhouse punch imaginable, but it never got there. Picked himself up and continued, and before I knew it, we were in the mud and shallow water. Real nut case. They went home, but wife and son insisted on keeping the tackle I had given him. Often wondered how the poor kid and wife could tolerate this stuff.
Hard to understand why this stuff happens.

Maybe you should have asked the parents first if you could give it to him
They could have seen it as a way to get to the child and take him in the bushes
You never know why people do things and again I can see that his dad was just a bully keeping his wife and kid under his thumb
I think you did a good thing. But. Maybe ask first
Ps hope you kicked daddies a@s

You did good. don't worry about it. The problem was there long before you showed up on the scene. I was not there, but it sounds like an alcohol or drug attitude.

Bapa. I've passed on most of my old rods. Knew I wasn't going to use them. Traded in several at bass pro spring classic . Hopefully they went to kids like they said. I saw some darn nice combos going in the door. Sad thing now days I'd be afraid to just hand one to a kid. If he got a hook in him or hurt in anyway probably see a lawsuit 👍👍

The lawsuit is possible, but at some point, I have to step above todays society for my own sanity.

Nutz some people are just crazy n ungrateful. I see people buying those cute little rods but they are a waste. I got Brody a zebco 202 outfit when he was little. Took it out one time. Found out it wasn't like my old 202's. You tried 👍👍

Don't knock those ice fishing size kids mini rods. Take three of them tied together. run a string off each eye and put a bright hookless lure off each string. It makes a great mobile to put above a crib. You might as well start them off right. Imprints fishing lures as a positive thing. That being said, don't use them for fishing.

I could use one of those old broomsticks you were talking about making a fence with, but guess I’m too old, lol.
This year I should be getting half off my fishing and hunting licenses.
Our fishing license goes until March 1. Kinda convenient for the ice fishers. Good

Just out of curiosity, what do you use a tuna stick for in Montana. (pulling out stuck tractors) They are to short and to stiff in the tip for sturgeon. I have seen some nice small mouth posted, but they are good live bait size for what we catch on the tuna sticks. Most are from people that have gone out on head boats and wanted their own gear. After a trip out at the lodge using appropriate lighter more flexible gear, they don't want anything to do with those clubs. I usually only had one out if I had a client that was willing to get skunked, but wanted only fish over 100 pounds. I would put it out with a 14 to 16 inch live bait or two to three pound strip bait. The target was 100 to 400 pound halibut. I also used them for salmon shark fishing. My clients never did break the 400 lb. mark. 384 lb. was the biggest halibut I ever brought aboard.

Well,I suppose you're correct about asking, but they were OK with me trying to fix his existing gear. Just gave him 3 quick shots when he tried to sucker punch me, so no he didn't get the @$$ kickin' he so richly deserved. But, that wasn't my intent, just chopped him down so he would stop. It worked, but he wanted to give it another try. Round 2 didn't work much better for him, and the Game club guys got us apart. No longer able to do that without "nasty tricks" so Im hoping it's never needed again.

Super idea. I hope you're a GrandPop, you have the instincts for it, nothing better than spoiling GK's when not providing guidance. Most youngsters pay close attention to Grandparents, so it's a great opportunity to give em solid advice, along with all your ❤️.

My Bapabear came from my oldest grandson trying to say Papa but it always came out Bapa. It stuck. P.S. I survived the calf injury, but I am still recovering from the treatment.

I just turned 76 and wrote an essay for our fly fishing club recently suggesting we all need an exit strategy for what to do with all of the gear we have gotten over the years. I like the idea of getting it into the hands of young folks, perhaps through a local program at the Y the Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts or even an area aquarium (the case here in Southeastern NC). I’m in the prime of life so I’m not ready to make the switch, just to start thinking about it. I don’t want any vultures at a yard sale buying my stuff and then reselling it for twice as much. There’s a special place in Hades for those jerks. Family gets first refusal but the rest….? What thoughts do they rest of you have?
