Thank Ben I will try it.
I believe the old Rapalas were made with Balsa wood?
What pound test line do you use?
Have great day
Andy

Balsa baits were the only thing I used when I bass fished, except for my H&H double willow blades.

I have a lead core trolling set up on which I use a split back Brown Trout Rapala on a 40 foot 8lb leader. I took the rear treble hook off and tied on a 2 ft 6lb leader with a Gulp minnow on it...works for me.

I've had a bluegill hit the Rapala so hard the entire treble hook went in his mouth 2 out the bottom lip 1 out the top. It wasn't very big but got added to our catch that day.

You're right about the balsa wood Andy. I can't remember the first time I used a jointed Rapala, it seems I have always had them. One of the reasons I disliked Pike was after a trip to Ontario my Rapala's would be chewed up with tooth marks from the Pike. Smallmouth loved those Rapala's & they were the fish I was after but Pike would attack those lures something fierce. i had one jointed Rapala with the rear section destroyed. I completely removed the rear section & added a spinner bait trail hook to the lure. I would put a white curtail grub on the hook & cast the modified lure out & use it on a jerk & retrieve method. It worked great. I still have that lure.

And you don't have to be a bass fisher. Trout love them as well. Although I prefer the yozuri Pin's minnow, the Rapala is a damn fine lure.

Would like to hear why you prefer the Pin minnow?

My cousin used to slay steelhead with a no.#3 Rapala, rainbow trout I believe was the pattern. Tis was in the tailwaters of the Sault Ste. Marie, MI hydro-electric plant. We fished from a boat. I had steelhead hitting the first fly I ever tied, a streamer of my own creation. I called it the Super-Duper-Yooper. Good memories, good times.

I've caught a lot of trout on the 2 1/2" in brown and brook trout and a lot of lm bass on 4" - 6" in silver/black.
