Nice catch!! Catfish are hungry during cold weather, and they have to eat something. Feeding them chicken livers makes for a good day anytime. Dress for the weather and you'll be fine. Thinking about doing some ice fishing next year.

My kids got me an electric heated vest for Christmas. I spent a day on my tractor pulling the grandkids sled. We were out about 4 hours in 20 degree weather. I wore an insulated shirt electric vest and oversized vest to protect the electric vest. Seems I have a habit of tearing vests. At any rate I was toasty all day just sitting and steering on the open tractor. No smart comments about a bare ars, bare feet etc. needed . The pockets on the vest were also heated. You can bet I will have it on for fall and spring fishing. Just an FYI: the battery is a flat rechargeable that fits in a special pocket on the vest. When I buy a second battery, I will be good for a full day of fishing. This is something you all might consider when fishing cold weather. I am sure sold.

Today I drove past the spot on the Susquehanna river where I usually fish for catfish and it was iced over. Not enough you could walk on it but way too much to be able to fish it.

Question for ya, Mike: We finally got back to Florida (from Colorado) on Sunday and went fishing Tuesday off a friend's dock onto the Intracoastal (Gulf of Mexico). Buddy and I caught one Pompano (undersized) and a dozen nice sized salt-water cats. They're probably as good eating as freshwater cats but certainly as hard to clean too.
That's my dilemma, we threw them back because we didn't know what to expect: how difficult are they to fillet? How do they taste? Are they worth keeping? Should we have kept them instead of throwing them back? A couple of them were Really Good Sized, I hated to throw them back, to tell you the truth.
Should have taken some pics but didn't consider it until I saw your "catch", Mike. All the comments you received from the guys on the Forum were raves about how great your catch was and how good the cats were gonna taste! That's what enticed me to reply to your note, you seem to be the "Catfish Expert" of the Forum!

I’m sorry I don’t have an answer for you on the taste of the catfish you caught I’ve never eaten a salt water catfish. But I imagine they are like most other fish you need to remove the blood line and trim the fat from the filet. As far as cleaning them if they are like fresh water ones they are really easy to dress if they are not really big. They are some good videos on YouTube on how to clean them. I do it all with my knife. That includes removing the skin. I’m not an expert fisherman by no means I just get lucky sometimes.

Time to sharpen your fillet knife and get to work. Nice stringer of cat.
