I’m in Colfax LA camping area at Red River and I see some pretty big fish breaching but I can’t tell what kind of fish. Does anyone know about the area? I bought a couple of telescope rods for ares like this. Hope to fish here for a couple days.

KatrinaGirl: I have never been on that part of Red River, but on the Texas part upstream, I am quite familiar, having grown up on it.

I would hazard a guess that what you are seeing are Alligator and needle-nose Gar. They are often seen
coming to the surface and gasping air. I believe that Garfish have two separate breathing systems. One with gills for underwater, and then another for breathing air directly into their lung/gills. You might research this on Google. Just Say

Excuse me for not also mentioning that Alligator Gars are the most fun you can experience if you want to have real excitement. If you hook one they are likely to jump as high as your head and do this more than once. They are the biggest fish, along with catfish, but are much more acrobatic and will give you a real fight. Rig some live bait where it will float within a few inches of the surface. Gars have a lot of sharp teeth, so you need either the very heavy leader or wire to keep them hooked.
