How many of you were lucky enough to camp and fish at the Salton Sea in California back in the day? Some of the we best fishing I’ve experienced was at the Salton Sea for orange mouth corvina. We used live baits and jigs to catch them. We would camp at Red Hill with mom and dad. Launch a 16 Valco skiff to fish North and South of Red hill sometimes going all the way across to the old navy installations. It was a 9 fish limit on the corvina and the bite could really heat up fast. I’ve also never been somewhere with such diverse bird life. This place was truely a top rate fishery back in the day. I’m attaching a photo of my brother and I with a small catch of fish.

I was fortunate enough to hit it multiple times during its peak. The volume of fish was insane, and size as well. Tossing various lures we easily caught and release 40-50 fish on every trip. I actually spent a considerable amount of time just before I retired tracking down a wanted fugitive I believed was by the sea. I did find him hiding under false identity of a person who died a long time prior, and I remember thinking his life was now over as well being sentenced to life in prison. At the same time, I found it ironic that this once fishing bonanza was also over. Surrounded by all the abandoned streets and cement pads for homes that never got built was fitting for a body of water that was now on its dead bed. It’s sad to remember what it was, and see the graveyard it’s become.

Yes it has become an eyesore of a dust pit. Very sad to see when you’ve enjoyed the glory days. California’s inland fisheries are trending the same direction to sadly. I wish they could step it up and manage our state resources with some competence.

Yes, like some of the others, I fished it back in the 60's. Was a really great fishery! Sad to see it go.

Yes my buddies and I would drive down from orange county and fish it in the Spring and have a ball catching fish on silver spoons and crocodile 🐊 spoon with the orange strip !! The biggest Covina I ever caught from the bank was 15 lbs.
We would walk out to our waist and cast out.
Loved the north Shore and you are right about the fishing I have pictures of my grandfather and great uncle with limits of Covina.!!
I also hunted at Wister Refuge since I was 11yrs old.
And the fish taste great.
Have a great week
Andy
The Good old days !!
