I have no measure of the effectiveness of red hooks, but I have developed an opinion and confidence that they attract more bites. By the way, I fish almost exclusively for crappie with minnows. Whether red hooks or gold hooks, I always use 'cam-action' hooks. That is a 'must' for me. I seldom fail to get a good hook set, and probably 90% of the time the hook is embedded in the firm tissue in the roof of the fish's mouth.

So what fish are you targeting? And are they color sensitive. Do they go for bait or bait similar lures. I know that with Kokanee colors are an attraction and their not looking for bait they’re attacking predators…so the better the attraction the better the odds of hookups…🐟on

Your comment makes me wonder: Why does corn, work so much better than scent on Kokanee rigs.

I have never heard that red hooks cuts down on bites, so why not. Would it not be a lot cheaper to just make a red mark with nail polish where the hook attaches?

Got Chrome hooks ? Buy a Red Magic marker, it's a lot cheaper than changing your hooks !

A sales person in a Bass Pro indicated that if you changed the hooks on crankbaits or top water lures to red hooks, you would increase your catch numbers. Just wondering what anglers on the forum felt about this concept. I appreciate any and all comments.

Run you'll get ya n na on this one. I have placed one red hook on some crankbaits. Can't say I noticed a difference one way or the other. Supposedly red on anything indicates a wounded fish n triggers a strike 👍

You are 100% right Grizzly
I've had it happened fishing with my son in law two yrs ago.
I was catching more Smallmouth then him so he changed to red hooks and started catching more bass.
True story so that is all we use now.
Have a great weekend

I've replaced many hooks on my lures over the years. I think red hooks look good on some lures but I can't say I've ever landed a fish using red hooks that would not have taken my lure with plain hooks. I have used red hooks for both drop shotting & wacky rigging but I couldn't say the're better. My fishing buddy won't use red hooks as he says the're not as sharp & dull faster than regular hooks. I do prefer red hooks when bluegill fishing. I think a man should use whatever hook or color that gives him the most mental confidence. That's just my opinion.

Well after reading all of the replies, I have some good red circle hooks so next time out saltwater fishing I’m going to use them in a white plastic bait with a red stripe and see how well it does. First I’ve heard about red hooks supposed to be better.

Well it’s been said that the white shoepeg corn puts out an enzyme that the Kokanee go for. And that you should put it on the hook with the opening of the kernel pointing towards the trailing end. I don’t use any commercial scents. I just soak my corn in tuna juice. I use water base. Oil gets too messy. Some soak it in garlic but I’ve found tuna works best for me…🐟on

Yep! It’ll put fish in the box. And just old yellow corn won’t work…🐟on

It always amaze me what and when fish want something. Last week trout fishing caught them on green garlic power bait. Today same time , same place, all they wanted was pink mouse tails go figure.
