Is a $400+ reel worth the price if you're only using 10lb braid?

If you are tournament fishing, go for the best. $400 is just a pinch compared to that $100,000+ boat and motor. $400 is money waisted if you are fishing for fun out of your bank breaking $1000 but effective floating aluminum can. $200 or less is all a non tournament or recreational tournament fisherman needs to be competitive with the fish and competitors. I believe if I had the best, most expensive rod and reel made, and KVD had a $69 Walmart rig, I would still lose.

LOL the last thing you said bapa is the truth. All the money in the world won't make you a better fisherman. I'd rather buy four $100 reels than one $400 reel but that just me. Have a nice evening brother πŸ‘

Did anyone ask what the target species is…and / or why the 10# braid?
In my limited experience with braid, I find the thinner diameter to be a pain as it cuts in on itself on the spool. I also believe I have seen dozens of posts about the same subject and suggesting 20 or even 30# be used for that reason?

OJ I've seen those post also. I use 10 lb braid n have never had that problem. I rarely use more than 20 lb. I do have up to 80 lb. I've never been much on following the main stream. πŸ‘

I agree with Mr. Wood-e! Unless money is no object, I would not spend that much for a reel. There are plenty of choices at less cost. Just Sayin...RJS

Mr Samples, tell me if my thinking on this cheap vs expensive issue is off base. A $100 Steven's single shot shotgun will kill a phesant just as dead as a $2500 Browning O/U. We both know that's true. I'm sure not going to be caught in a Kansas wheat field carrying a Steven's Single shot & neither are you. It's the same principal with a rod & reel. I've been eyeballing a new Shimano reel & St Chroix rod that will set me back over $700. I know it won't catch any more fish than my old round Shimano Calcutta's mounted on a Quantum rod. But, I sure look good sitting in my boat holding it. Tight lines.

LOL that one way of looking at it BC. It's your money to spend. I've said it before. If it fits your budget n feels good in your hand get it. πŸ‘πŸ‘. Shotgun comparison was good one. Went to a high $ gun club with a friend yrs ago. Shooting clays. All those guys had $1000 + guns. I had a $90 12ga H&R pump. My low was 18 my high was 23. I hunted real birds with mine. They couldn't believe it. I still have that gun.

im not going to try and break any rules about gear here, but i've found that i a few times and places what you're paying for unneccessariliy calls out for the higher the price, the better it is.There are a lot of overpriced merchandise on the market on any given day.

i will add that if it makes your confidence level higher because you believe you bought the best, then go with God.

I hunted with a 16 gauge Winchester single shot shotgun growing up. For Doubles (Dove and Quail) that I could NOT run the shot ring over both, I had a second shell in my left hand above the barrel. Shoot the first bird, break open and eject the old shell and then jack my left hand back and the forward to poke the second home and then shoot the second bird when I could not run the shot ring over both at the same time. I had to buy my own shells so I got real good about not missing. 8 shot for Birds and 4 shot for Jack Rabbits.

Gmon Audigger. I use a 16ga bolt action for awhile n a 410 bolt a 12ga single. Then I got my 12ga pump in 1968 n never looked back. Then we had plenty of birds around here. Now never see a quail or wild pheasant. Only doves are a couple that come to my bird feeder. Hunted squirrel n rabbit. Now I watch the rabbits n squirrels in the yard. Pup enjoys them. My H&R had a beautiful finish n still does. Never failed me. Thinking back I wonder how many 1,000's of rounds I've run though her. Had a reloader n a clay bird setup. Friends would come over on wkn n we hunt or shoot clays. Fun days brother. πŸ‘πŸ‘

I wouldn't pay $400 for a real to begin with. The pole is where you feel most of the bite. I'll pay more for a pole vs a reel. But that is just me.

Agree with you Mr Wood but then again I've never fished with a 400$ reel my reels are in the 200$ range and they work fineπŸŸπŸŽ£πŸ˜€πŸ‘

Shimano Calcutta. Less than 400. But more than that, you’ll probably never need another one. Bulletproof and great drag systems. I use on rivers for salmon and steelhead. Also great for trolling when pulling hardware

I love those Calcutta's. If a man has never used one he just really doesn't know how smooth a reel can be. I've been looking at the Calcutta Conquest 100. Price $549. No one in my part of the country has one on display so I haven't had my hands on one. I also have several other Shimano's but they just don't quite have the Calcutta feel. I know I really don't need that high dollar reel, I'll never wear out the reels I have. It's just something I think would be neat to own. I'd really like to mate that reel with a St Chroix Elite Legend but I'd almost be afraid to use a $650 fishing rod. I know a $550 reel won't cause me to catch more or bigger fish. Many times my wife outfishes me & she uses spincast gear. There's no hurry. I'll mull over it a while. Tight lines.

Only one problem a $650 rod will break as fast as a $65 rod

You can get a nice for under 3. But been awhile since I bought one. Seems to me one and done when you purchase a Calcutta. Good luck. And I have broken spendy rods. But my Calcutta just keeps keepen on
