What is your deciding factor on what lure you'd pick on a day out, and its traits, i.e color, action, etc.

I'm personally a fan of using my lucky/favorite lure even if the color or style doesn't match conditions or intended purpose. Soft swim bait shads with natural colors and red bellies.

I'll attempt to throw this thing wherever I can. I even try to convince myself to run in through weeds "maybe I'll not snag any on this throw" delving deeper into delusion with every cast.

But for some reason I keep going

A lot of it depends on water clarity for me. If the water is muddy I'll throw a white spinner bait with gold willow leaf and gold Colorado blade. If the water is fairly clear I'll throw darker colors.

Common sense will dictate quite a bit. Example: you don’t throw a topwater popper in 15ft of water when the bass are deep. As other guys have said, water clarity / time of day will dictate what and when. There is nothing wrong with throwing a swimbait in the weeds and swimming it out. Just make sure you are using the right type jig head for the situation.
