Any reports of False Albacore around Cape Lookout or further south on the north side of Cape Fear? Got my fly rods ready, my boat has been serviced and we have guys and gals in the Cape Fear Flyfishers chomping at the bit to go fishing for Fat Alberts.

Why not ? That's why they make 8, 10 and 12 wt rods. Seriously they are a challenge and that's why they do it. Just need a good reel with a ceramic dish drag.

OK......I would love to see someone tame a 15lb FA on a fly rod in say 3 minutes, those suckers are the living version of a torpedo

Fly rods are great for throwing the “match the hatch” flies similar to the size bait the fish are eating. In addition, you don’t have to reel in all the line to re-cast when you don’t get a strike. Cape Lookout is the world’s epicenter for going after False Albacore with fly rods. I haven’t checked but I bet there are some good YouTube videos showing how much fun it is. We use heavier rods and line than is used in mountain streams in large part to help cast in the wind. It’s a lot of fun and very productive.

False Albacore is a member of the Tuna family often referred to as "little tunney" and often mistakenly called Bonita which is a member of the Mackerel family, they are not the same fish

A 15 pounder in 3 minutes would be pretty hard to do. That would be like using a surf rod to catch bluegills. What’s the fun in that? False Albacore on a fly rod is a good match, however.

Little tunnys are the finest thing on a fly rod though we do have a few months left before they show up in good numbers

I find them around the lobster wreck and the Naeco Wreck. 45 miles south out of Bogue inlet. I only caught yellowfin though
