Saltwater baitcaster for deep sea boat
Mainly fishing Southern California and Baja. Looking for a baitcaster for my first deep sea fishing trip. Probably will only be going once or twice a year so was hoping to not break the bank. Keep it under $100. I do a lot of shore surf fishing so willing to spend a bit more if it can work from the shore as well. Will shoot for anything depending on season but mainly just perch and bass from shore, haven’t tried for halibut but will one day. Yellowtail (if lucky), rockfish, and sculpin from the deep sea. Thanks in advance for any advice!!! Double internet points for opinion on any lures you like for either scenario!

Unless you use a bait caster better than spinner I would go with this or the like.
PENN Fierce III Live Liner Free Spool Fishing Reel
If you are just dropping off a boat and do not need to cast, any of the Penn reels 909 and up are good. If you are not fishing over 100 ft. So are the Ambassadors, say 5500 to 6500. Surprisingly, you can get a very cheap Penn used and rebuild it (including drag) for under $100. You will then have a great reel. Parts and diagram are available on the net. If you can build Legos, you can rebuild a reel.
I basically use nothing but Penn fir bottom fishing. You can get them from a 2/0 up, and they make high speed versions for at least the 113 and 114s. Great fo when you have 200 feet of water and lots of little bait stealers.

If you are going to use this reel to surf cast then it changes the game. The Abu Garcia Ambassador 6600 is about $150+- but it will last the rest of your life. It is one of the best surf cast reels made because it has a free spool. That means the spool is support by ball bears and will turn without turning any of the gear.
I have never used anything but spinning in the surf. It is also easier for casting off a boat unless you are very experienced. Like I posted earlier, it is hard to beat Penn in saltwater. They are designed to hold a lot of line. That goes for bait casting and spinning. Both are easy and cheap to rebuild. Both have outstanding drags for big fish. Check the pawn shops. E-Bay can be good, but usually to expensive. Craig's list is a good source, as well.
Pay boats I’ve been on wanted me to use their rod and reel.

I agree ! These are battle tested over years and they’ll take a lickin’ and keep on tick in’ most tackle shops can service them parts are readily available if you ever need them . These things last forever. If you ever want fancier trolling type level wind step up to penn squall and penn fathom.

Are they rented for the day or supplied???
One other option is piscifun salis x in 3000 or 5000 size. Lots of great features, nice reels at affordable price. A little heavier but a nice lever drag . stronger drag and higher retrieve rate than penn.

Party boats or head boats here in NJ rent their rigs for 10-15 dollars add that on to the fare. Most will allow you to use your own They want you to be successful and they know their stuff will work, they don’t know about your stuff. Some fishermen have better stuff than the boat but some don’t. If you drop their rig in the water they’ll charge you for it. Know that before renting.
Off shore party/fishing boats I’ve been on it was included in price and a generic bait was included they usually had an upgrade bait you could buy. Off Charleston coast we went out 100 miles

Around here they charge for rental. During the summer a lot of tourists go on the party boats and they don't have the gear. The regulars always have there own. Mist of the party boats don't run that far out except in the winter for cod and seabass, and only a few boats at that.
A decent rod for bottom fishing can be had for under $70. The Penn 113 H is around $125. So under $200. For a very capable setup. Take care of it , you’ll have it when your really old and have more time to fish😀
Agreed. My favorite out of a dozen bottom fishing reels. And I make my own rods.
