I’m figuring out what I want for a rod for bass and trout fishing with 1/8 oz lures, and I figure to get good cast distance out of them, I’ll probably use 6-lb line because it’s lightweight.
Would I be better off using braid if I’m looking to lighten line weight? I’ve only ever used mono, so braid is a dark art to me.
Follow up—how line shy are Bass and trout? Do I need Fluoro leaders, or can I tie the braid directly to the lure?

4 strand Braid will be smaller at 6# LBhan the 6 LB Mono so it will cast farther. Use a leader if you want, I like the Green color best. I don't use Spider Wire as the coating comes off when you reel it in. Builds up on the Eyelets and the Bail Roller on the Spinning reels.
One of the best qualities of braid is that is "lays" better. If you lay a length of braid on the ground it lays pretty flat whereas mono and f/c will tend to coil. That is also true on the reel, so it tends to come off the reel straighter and you get longer casts. But the main difference is that pound for pound (line strength) it is usually half the thickness of mono. The only real drawback to braid is that it does not "knot" well. You have to be really careful that your knot is tied correctly and has no overlaying wraps, draws up smoothly and securely. As for leaders, I'd recommend f/c just because I've always used a leader because of it's near invisibility. Just make sure you get your knots tight.

Tony I've used braid for many yrs n I've honestly never had a knot problem. I used the improved clinch knot for yrs. Then I found the Palomar knot. Use it on everything I can n on any line.

That is the knot I use also, but I'm pretty confident you make sure your knot is tied well, Grizz.

Yes I do Tony. At first I didn't realize now n then one part of line was hooked on bottom of hook eye. After seeing that I make sure everything is where it needs to be n pulled tight. I also cut my tag ends shorter than most. I like my heat cutter for braid. If seals the cut. I have good scissors but no matter how clean the cut it will fray. Have a good day brother. Tight lines tighter knots 👍👍
I hear that! Going to the beach today for some long casting and short fish, and hoping maybe it gets mixed up and we get long fish on short casts......lol
