Just wanted to introduce myself. I havnt been fishing in about 15 years, my sister got me back in it the end of last year. I find myself going fishing with my wife, sister and 7 year old son atleast 3 times a week all this summer! We have had a blast! I have taken a big interest in catfish lately, were mainly catch and release but were planning on eating some at some point. If anyone has any advice on catching big cats hit me up! Thanks
Welcome to the stage! Where are you fishing in this great state of ours? No catfish expert but Iโve caught a few this year and no my area pretty well.
Welcome to the stage fishingforcats. Big fish like big bait not sure what kind of catfish you are targeting. shovelheads I use Creek chubs or Bluegill make sure your hook is big enough for the size bait you are using. if you use circle hooks you don't set the hook just tighten it up and reel it in to set the hook. Good luck an share some pics. Google and YouTube are great resources shows all kinds of different catfish rigs ๐๐
Also I have found the smaller catfish are better eating especially out of the river haven't been in the water that long
Thanks for the greetings! I'm in Canton, Ohio. I live like 20 minutes from Berlin, we fish Deer Creek, Walborne, Atwood, Sippo, Guilford, Salem lake, Mogadore, West Branch, Piedmont, Ohio River and went to Erie 2 times. Had a hot summer so our pontoon trip on piedmont for 16 hours gave me 2 cats. We started using cut bluegill with big circle hooks at Deer Creek. Over labor day weekend we pulled 1 4lb , 2 5lb and a 6lb Channel out using heads. Planning on getting a boat for next year but we will see. As for eating I heard little bullheads were great but we might wait til next season before we try any.
I'd say them Channel Cats you caught at Deer Creek would have been good eating๐๐

Welcome F4C, as Whitey said, cut bait is a killer. Most of the cat fisherman that frequent the shop swear by bluegill cut bait.
We just started using bluegill a few weeks back, have had some nice catches so far. We mainly fish smaller lakes but are looking forward to hitting bigger lakes with them soon!
You're on the right track especially with live bluegills.

Welcome to the Stage. I fish Deer Creek when I get a chance. Lately I've kinda laid low because of the heat. I have seen people catching catfish at Deer Creek. Locksmithing has kinda kept me a little busy. If you're out and about see my van . C&M Locksmithing. Maybe we can connect sometime.
I'm being told where I like to fish is actually berlin? I like the bridge on price street!
I noticed recently that they are lowering the water in Berlin. I've fished off the Price bridge a few times.
Funny you say about the heat, about a month ago the heat index was over 100, right after 7 pm I caught my first 5 lb cat from the bridge. I didn't figure anything would bite we were just trying to get out of the house. Are they any good spots around there? Deer creek, Berlin or walborne? I usually just go to the public areas because they are easier to get to

Mostly I target crappie and bass. I've fished Walborn on German church Rd. It's also the country line for between Stark and Portage counties. Another spot is below the spillway of Deer Creek and Berlin. I really need to get out more.
