The Fox in the Hen House

It may not have been the hen house, but this little puppy was digging for slugs, which is fine, but not in my hostas. It all started about two weeks ago when a buddy and I were drinking beer out on the patio about dust and she came trotting up to the patio and gave us the once over and trotted away. I didn't think anything of it. Three nights ago, we had a storm with high winds, and the next morning I found a sheet of my ground fabric laying out in the yard and I had thought the wind had caused it. I put it back, fine and dandy. Two nights ago 5 sheets of ground fabric laying out in the yard and we didn't have much wind. So, I looked the area over where the cloth was and then I saw the answer, claw marks like something had been digging, and right away the fox came to mind. Last night I set two live traps out. The first one didn't get her, and she ate all of the chicken scraps in and around it but didn't set the trigger off. The second one did it's job. But, maybe she has pups running around here. We will wait and see, I have more chicken scraps.

Have so many reds around here. I’ve got an old slate quarry in back of the house that’s an ideal denning area and hear foxes barking every night with their harsh callls. Back in 1973- 96 we were getting 90- 100 bucks a pelt and that kept them in check. Now you’re lucky to get $10.

Wow! Back in the 70's, $90-$100 was a bunch of serious money!

A coon pelt was worth $50. to $60. In '59, I got 108 coon with Ol' Midnight, and got an average of $56. a piece for the pelts. I was just a wet-nosed 16-year old kid at the time. What do you think a 16 y/o kid did with $6000. He bought another dog.

We used the Victor trap which had to be tuned. Then went to the Northern brand with rubber inserts on the jaws. Reds were $45 & grays $30

last year had a lot of trouble with rabid foxes attacking people
dont remember hearing about any bounty
back in the early 70s i was bringing a empty beer truck back to albuquerque from farmington nm coming off a mountain road was icy and a HERD of coyotes crossed the hwy rite in front of me. i took my foot off the gas and just held on leaving a trail of blood and fur flying in the icy cloud coming off the rear wheels. dont know how many died and i was a 21 yr old kid too shook up th worry about it. got back to the whse and the guy waiting for me looked at the truck and knew rite off what happened.he was real excited and yelling how many? wheres the tails?
well turns out there was a 25$ bounty at the time paid by the tail. i was sure i got at least 10 of them and said we should go back. it was over 150 miles and he said the "locals" propably had the tails before i was over the next hill
guess it pays to stay informed. back then my rent was 45$ a month. those tails wouldve gone a long way
