I was fishing in the rain on and off heavy. Young boy came up to me and asked what do fish do in the heavy rain .he went on to say that he never caught fish in the rain.hence the question.where asI hooked into a nice size pickerel.I told him a lot of my beliefs but am curious as to what others have to say .please sarcasm need not needed since I turned the young lad onto this site .he is new to the game

My Dad always said that the fish bite better in the rain.
I never tested that myself.
I don't go out in the rain much. The man of steel might rust!

Been fishing for more than 75 years and have done well enough when it rained on my outing. My largest fluke (Yankee summer flounder) at 14 pounds came during a Summer downpour. Another personal best chain pickeral of 7 pounds (NJ state record at that time was 11 pounds approx) hit a rapala minnow near the bank during an April shower. As long as there is no lightening or violent winds, why not?

Fly fishing trout is always better in the rain. The fish can't see you as well because of the raindrops on the water.

I have fished in the rain before and done quite well. HOWEVER, I usually do OK fishin during NICE weather and it's ALOT more comfortable for me. Bein retired, I can choose to fish bout any day I want. So I choose not to go fishin in the rain anymore. But that's just me. If you don't mind the rain, go for it.

Years ago, my dad and I always had good luck on rainy days as long as it was a gentle rain and not connected to a big cold front. Wear a bathing suit or rain gear depending on tolerance for cold.

There's no such thing as "bad weather", there's just "poor choice of clothing for the day".
Rain is almost always a result of a "low in barometric pressure" front, which is often a trigger for the bite.

Like Fly, I love trout fishing in a gentle rain. It knocks the bugs off the tree into the water triggering the bite.

Gotta agree with Saw…fishin is a hobby…i spend enough time in the elements at work…i prefer to fish when its not raining. When i see the weather man say heavy rain and i have to work, i know im in for a long wet uncomfortable tour….if he says that and im off….then im staying dry. Ill fish the next day.

Me too. Since we're goin on 3 or 4 years of drought, it's rare that my fishin gets called on the account of rain though.

A branch of the Millstone near E. Windsor. Got it on 6 pound test and light action rod.

I've fished all kinds of weather conditions... Yes, to "dress for it"... To "be prepared", is very important, not only for comfort, but, also for continued good health.
If I'm fishing a small pond, I don't see much sense in "keeping after it" for very long, in HEAVY rain, as all manner of fish food will be "washing into" the pond, most usually. (It all depends upon the "body of water" and ¿How important is it, that I make use of THIS TIME, attempting to put nourishment on ice?
