I use to fish there, not often, about a dozen times, but this was over 20 years ago, and now with the water level extremely low I don't really have clue where to fish now, I can give you all old areas when the lake was full, but it may or may not be good information now.

Largemouth Bass fishing should be starting to heat up as the lake is more calmer and most people are gone. Crappy is not a good time to find during the fall, but bluegill can be caught anytime, also Catfish is good anytime of the year as that is the case anywhere catfish can be found.

Catfish become more active at night and will move into shallower flat areas, of course use stink bait, I use to catch quite a bit of cats at night.

Best place to catch bass is in the center of the lake on the southwestern side; please look at the map on this website: http://www.californiasgreatestlakes.com/bass/bass_fishing.html Right where the 222 oval marking is as close as I can get you, and that is pretty darn close, if you go out about a third of the way into the lake past that 222 oval they hit pretty good in that area. The only other area that I know of that had good bass fishing was up at the northern end where the river dumps into the lake on the western side.

You will want to use oversized swimbaits that mimic the juvenile trout and salmon to catch bass, but also bring along rubber worms, especially purple, spinnerbaits and shallow crankbaits. You need a good assortment of bass artificial baits along with live nightcrawlers.

Not sure what other information you're looking for, but ask if I missed something.

[quote=curtiscooper]going to bass lake ca. this weekend what are best spots for bass, crappy...

Well Curtis I'll share what my experience has been. I'm no expert and in California I pretty much only bass fish in a boat. I usually fish constantly for eight hours, Bass Lake and elsewhere, so some success is just persistence rather than talent. Having said that, here goes....I live fairly close to Bass Lake and now that the summer crush of people are mostly gone I'm fishing it more regularly, about once a week. It is one of the few lakes around here with water, currently I think about 60%. I have had good days there and skunk days, I've had epic days (at least for me) there, and dink days. I'm out of town right now but last week I was having a dink day and in the afternoon picked up a three pounder on an otherwise uneventful cast at a place that I've cast before without result. I tend to default to drop shot, using morning dawn Aaron's Magic or greens, ribbon tails more than stick baits. The lake has been more weedy than I remember so I have been trying Wacky rigged with nose weights on a weedless hook. I lost a bite last week that took the bait off a double o ring wacky but never saw it so that might have been the one fish in the whole lake that was interested in that presentation and of course my mind conjures up the illusion that it was BIG! My current fishing partner is fairly new to bass fishing, so me being the most experienced bass fisherman in the boat could be a bad thing. My former fishing buddy moved to Missouri and he always made sure we upped our game. We learned a lot together but I learned a lot from him. Anyway, my new partner and I tend to fish the northern side of the lake, rock piles and docks. Most docks are pretty shallow now so if we don't turn up anything early, we tend to go a little deeper on rock piles and humps. In Spring, if the lake is full, docks have been pretty consistent and we'll fish them all day. At the very northwest end where the creek flows in now is very shallow and muddy and has been since last spring. I don't even go up there. Another thing to consider is Bass Lake is a very popular vacation spot and I don't fish there from Memorial Day to after Labor Day. It's a mad house of boats and jet skis. Then complicating it is some agreement from 100 years ago where they drain the lake beginning after Labor Day. So usually by the end of November or so, sometimes you can't even launch at the public ramp. There is another ramp at Ducey's that I think is $15 in and $15 out and I won't pay it so if the public ramp is out, so am I. I haven't shore fished there in years but I've seen and heard of some success off the rocks and pretty much that is only on the southern side, Forest Service side. It is a pretty lake and fairly clear water so the scenery is nice. So that's pretty much what I can share, like I said, I'm no expert but it is my experience. Good luck and let us know how you do.

Not sure where Curtis went, but I live right down in Clovis and haven't fished Bass Lake yet, so I really appreciate the posts. Sounds like I'll have to wait for it to fill up, tho'...
