Going to be in Gilbert, Az 2nd week of October want to take grandson for trout, any suggestions?
I'm in Gilbert, also ! The local 'Community' lakes/ponds don't
get stocked with trout until mid-
November, so the Valley is out !
Your best bet is to hit either the Prescott area or the 'Rim' country lakes, N/E of Payson, off Rt. 260 !
In the Prescott Valley there are at least five small trout lakes - Willow/
Watson/Fain/Goldwater and Lynx !
If you take Rt.89A from Prescott to Jerome, you can fish Mingus Lake
at the top of the ridge - it is a small
(3 acres ?) remote trout lake with relatively little pressure ! The
furthest is about 2 hrs./20 min.!
If possible, Mon through Thurs. are your best bet to avoid the crowds for all these lakes !
The three closest lakes on the 'Rim'
are Black Canyon Lake (2 hrs.-
20 min.), Willow Springs Lake (2 hr.-
10 min.), or Woods Canyon Lake -
(2 hrs. - (+/-)5 min.) !
There are other trout lakes on the 'Rim' and a few just south of
Flagstaff, but they all involve at
least a three-hour drive - personally,
I try to keep day trips down to 2hrs./
2-1/4 hrs. - three-hour drives require an overnight stay (for me), or it's not worth the drive time !
