LMAO, they are there, it is all about getting them to bite and knowing they ARE biting!

as you can see a lot people are not to helpful when it comes to giving out information that may help others catch a fish that they are hoping to catch. I don't live down there so I can't give you much help as to where but my brother used to fish that area and caught a lot by pegging an orange tone bead about two fingers above the hook and then putting a small inline weight about 2' above the hook and pegging a float at the depth of the water he was fishing and he caught both steelhead and salmon on that rig all the time. You can usually find the best water to fish by looking for parked cars and doing some walking around and watching. Good luck and hopefully you will find a helpful fisherman who is willing to help a fellow angler out by sharing some secrets that work in that area.
Okay, thanks DC for the help... I haven't had a bite in 8 years...not one bite so I know I'm doing something wrong but I don't know what that is...Mike

send us a picture of what your terminal gear looks like. that is probably the first place to make adjustments.
I'll send it later in the afternoon...my girls ready to go to the store so I got to go before she changes her mind .

BS, did I say anything factually wrong? It takes a lot more than an "orange tone bead", you have to tell him more than that, so not very helpful! He should tell us all just what gear he is using, rod size and rating, reel, line and lb rating leader and lb rating, lead, hooks etc. then we all would know he is serious and is willing to put some effort into before we go on a long diatribe which most, as as was noted by one of our members (Spirit), never respond, thanking or asking more questions. I have given out info till I get finger cramps and find that most don't respond or it was an Admin made up question to get viewer responses.
My fatherinlaw who was an extremely good Steelhead fisherman tells the story about a guy asking him how to catch Steelhead. Said he never gets any bites. My FIL told him let me see you cast and drift your lure. He watched him complete the drift again saying he didn't get any bites! My FIL told him, "but you did get bites". The guy couldn't believe it. So my FIL told him to cast and drift and set the hook when he told him. Caught his first Steelhead. So many think they can use any kind of gear, hook, leader/line size and catch Steelhead. If that were the case you wouldn't hear people say, I have fished for them for 8 years and can't catch one!

John, you are fortunate, you live within a 15-30 minute drive from 3 of the most productive Steelhead and Salmon streams in SW Washington. In addition, you have the Columbia River practically running through town.
The three streams are the Kalama, Lewis and Cowlitz.
As far as catching fish in these rivers, your method and presentation will be dependent upon the type of water you are fishing and the species, and whether you have access to a boat.
You should go in to Bob’s Sporting Goods in Longview and ask for advice and pointers about where to fish, when to fish for the species your after, and what to use in each situation.
You could also join a club like SWW Anglers or Northwest Steelheaders. There you will meet some folks and maybe find a good mentor.

John, the only time I’ve ever fished in Washington State it was on the Klama River I believe. I went with a guide and we did good, bouncing Roe if I remember correctly. Good Luck
Thanks to you all for your advice and I'll follow all of your suggestions and look this thread up from time to time and I'll let you know how it's going... thanks again..Mike...

John......You need a fishing Buddy/Mentor. My guess is he or she will note something right away that you are doing incorrectly. I just can't conceive what it could be, but it must be major if you can't hook up or even get a bite for EIGHT YEARS ! My condolences. Question... Before this drought did you catch fish, or are you a guy who was a novice 8 yrs. back and never caught fish at all? Give us some more info. please. I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels terrible about your dilemma.

Yes, like I said previously, tell us about your gear.
