I thought that Pan fish was any fish that fit into a pan. If it gets to be longer than 20"s then it won't fit in a pan anymore. When you hunt game you shoot it, a gut, it and take it home to eat. So how is a game fish any different from a pan fish. Trout, Kokanee, salmon and steelhead are mostly what I fish for to eat.
They are a little bigger than most pan fish 😆 but I've fried them in frying pans that they fit in. It doesn't matter, just fry and enjoy them 👍 very tasty with some butter and garlic salt 😋

So bluegill and crappie and perch aren't game fish? Oh oh. I think you may have started something.
maybe or maybe not. the terms(names) we all use for various fish are usually a local thing which frequently has nothing to do with their species. y'all call a particular cichlid "crappie", in this county we have always called them Calico bass. I fished with a friend from Kentucky who came to visit and he was shocked that we had a different name for one of his favorite target fish! however if you look up calico bass.....it's not a fresh water fish!
Yup you are correct, calico bass are salt water fish I've seen them. They look just like a fresh water large mouth bass just calico colors.
No matter what they are tasty

They are also a cleaner water fish. I believe they are more safe to eat.
Crappie are called Calicoes in some areas.
No, its more like comparing Filet mignon to friggin hamburger!!! Trout being the filet, of course!! They are delicate and have a flavor like nothing you've ever eaten! Any fish that will live in any old hot water mud hole just aint making it!
Fear not, oh Flyguy, for you shall never see me putting a Brownie in da pan! Great fighters, pound for pound, in the trout realm, but as an eating fish - YUK!
