Had a great day with the channel cats
We probably caught over 30 and some really good one’s we only kept 4 with a combined weight of 19 lbs. most was in the 2 to 4 lbs range. I also caught a really big leather back turtle. Everything was caught on chicken livers.
Nice Mike.
Chicken livers is my go to bait for channel cat.
Good catching WV Mike, as usual! Nice looking Cats ,thanks for the pics!!
Well, I have always had a fondness for turtle soup. On this occasion I was manager of a H2S Safety company. We got a call that a rig about 50 miles North West of Baton Rouge might have a problem. Since my manager who would have ordinarily checked it out was not available, I grabbed some tools and flew over to Baton Rouge and rented a car to go to this rig. Along the road from the Mississippi River to the drilling rig, there must have been at least 100 turtles that had been run over by cars and killed!
After checking the rig, our equipment and determining everything was o.k. I drive back and stop at a small country cafe for lunch. They offered turtle soup, but after all I'd seen that morning, i could not choose to order any! Just Sayin...RJS

Thanks for sharing Mike. Did ya keep the turtle to eat? I’m not sure what kind of turtles are edible but that’s a nice big one.

I have eaten them but some of the leather backs are now protected on the endangered species list in wv.
Mike the one you caught isn’t on the endangered list. I just looked it up. They can live 30 to 70 years. Did you release it? There’s two soft shells in your area.

I did release it the one I got looked like the one in the second photo
I have eaten them, the leather backs are kinda hard to handle they don’t have enough tail to hold on to and they will bite
Looks like a beautiful lake along with the nice fish, what lake you fishing at Mike?

How in the world can one of them bite you with that puckered mouth? I’d love to see one of those 70 pounders.

Mike,
The guys I catfish with when we fish with liver we use a circle hook and sewing thread. After getting the liver sort of on the hook, start winding the thread up by the eye if the hook. Start tight and lighten up on it as you work your way down. I've cast liver that way with a 2oz sinker as far as I could and it doesn't come of. Those are some great looking cats.
They are not quite as aggressive as an old snapper but they will bite the crap out of ya.

I have done that and have used the bait bags and pantyhose and it does work.
